Star Wars Battlefront's File Size Isn't as Massive as We Expected

Star Wars Battlefront will be a 23GB download on PS4, 19GB on Xbox One and 27GB on PC.

Video games are getting pretty big these days, and I'm not talking about their open worlds. All of the shiny new graphics and textures often come with a hefty file-size price tag, leading to games being Star Wars Battlefront [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132922-Titanfall-Dev-Explains-The-Games-35-GB-of-Uncompressed-Audio] is pretty big, it's not quite as big as we expected from a studio who's last game is pushing 50GB with the addition of all its expansions.

"Star Wars Battlefront will be a 23GB download on PS4, 19GB on Xbox One and 27GB on [PC]" Tweeted the official EA Star Wars Twitter [https://twitter.com/eastarwars/status/663781042684235776]. As for why there is a differentiation between the three platforms, it could be that the PS4 has higher quality textures than Xbox One (and PC's are even higher), or that the game is simply really well optimized for its respective platforms.

This said, EA has not ruled out a day one patch, and if gaming history is anything to go by, the 27GB file size could balloon all the way up to 30+. The game's earlier open beta [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/142562-Star-Wars-Battlefront-Beta-Announced] was a 7GB download on consoles and 11GB on PC, although it only contained two maps.

Either way, it shouldn't be too hard on your hard disk space, (or your internet cap for those of your poor souls that have internet caps) when the game launches next week.

Well, of COURSE the file sizes are smaller than you'd have thought.

Just think of how much content they cut from BattleFront 2!

Well that's unexpected.

Though I suppose having only 4 planets helps, so there's only really 4 different texture themes or something.

But whats with that 4 GB difference? I can understand it for PS4 to PC, but for Xbone to PS4? Eesh.

Well size isnt everything.
Especially when paid DLC is concerned. Here's hoping they don't add a sprint function as a microtransaction.
I trust EA about as much as I do bounty hunters. The Scum...

And the Battlefront hate circlejerk continues. It's definitely not going to stay at 27GB what with the DLC/Expansions. Still, I look forward to playing it if the AMD issues are fixed.

Given how little content there is, I'm actually surprised it's that large to begin with.

They're waiting to day 1? Black Ops 3 had at least two patches before release.

And still lost connection to XBL on a regular basis which for some completely stupid reason kicked you out of the single player.
Offline single player? What is this, the 1990s?

Next you're going to tell me I shouldn't have expected people to be using hacks or glitches to kill me from inside walls and other ostensibly solid scenery!

That sounds about reasonable I think. Fallout 4 was around 28 gigs and that game is just full of stuff to do and i'd expect a linearish online shooter not to have the file size of a huge open world WRPG.

Still when it comes to installation shenanigans, nothing beats Konami and its CD installation of MGS5. Literally just a shortcut of a Steam product code on a disk and nothing else, no game files at all. What even.

Oh boy only 23MB!

Considering how many games are coming out that require a ton of disk space, I feel like I need more storage that exists on Earth.

At this point I have no idea if you are serious or not.

Just to clarify, you are joking about the sprinting thing, right?

Don't worry, everyone. The several patches coming out a month or so after release will fill in the missing 15-25 GB. /jk

At least 19/23 GB is more reassuring than the 888 MB (not a typo, I do mean megabytes) that is the full retail game called Mario Tennis Ultra Smash (when Mario Kart 8 weighed in at 6GB). At least with both SW:B and MTUS, your storage for the respective systems and data caps will not be hurting as much.

When it comes to EA and DLC, who knows?!

Texture files resolutions. PC is highest, Xbone the lowest and as a result the overall file sizes shrink. So the Xbone's weasly little graphics chip does have at least one advantage, smaller install sizes since there's no need for those ma-hoo-sive texture libraries!

On a different note, it looks like EA have learned from the Titanfall debacle and aren't cramming a shed load of uncompressed audio files into the game to make it look bigger than it is. Unless of course Battlefront is secretly a 2GB game and the rest is every line of dialogue in every language recognised by the United Nations.

Huh?

I'm on AMD, and apart from a bit of lag on the menus before and after game (during game was absolutely fine) i didn't have an issue

Yeah, that's what I mean. Though people've been reporting more than a bit of lag on the menus/after a game. Probably depends on the rig.

so still pretty hefty then. at least it looks like they arent going to fuck PC graphics over just because consoles are slow.

or that the game is simply really well optimized for its respective platforms.
Optimization improves performance, but not reduce file size. if file size is lower then something has to be removed (or more compressed but compressing is unlikely here because it would take a lot of power to decompress all of this in real time when playing, and consoles are not known for their power). its most likely lower resolution textures.

Xbox is weaker and thus uses lower resolution textures, that take less space.
