Valkyria Chronicles IV, Valkyria Chronicles Remaster Coming to PS4

But will it see a release outside of Japan?

While the PlayStation 3 would eventually host some of the best games of the last console generation, its early library was a tad on the lackluster side. It wasn't uncommon for early purchasers to go months without receiving any new titles of note. Those sad days weren't without a few shining stars, however. 2008's <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/editorials/reviews/5530-Review-Valkyria-Chronicles>Valkyria Chronicles, for instance, provided gamers with a gorgeous experience that led players through an enjoyable and emotional story built around unique gameplay that combined third person shooters and turn-based strategy RPG. Sadly, the game would go on to be something of a sales bomb in North America, quickly forcing the franchise off of the PS3 onto the cheaper-to-develop-for PSP. That being the case, its publishers at Sega have now revealed that the franchise will soon be receiving another sequel and that it will be coming to the PS4.

The news came in the latest issue of the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu where it was announced that Valkyria Chroncies IV is in development and being planned for release alongside a PS4 remaster of the original PS3 game. Sadly, Sega neglected to mention any sort of release window for the remaster or Valkyria Chronicles IV. That said, the Famitsu article did reveal that the subtitle for the new sequel will be Valkyria of the Blue Revolution.

The big question, of course, is whether or not the new sequel and remaster will be making their way west. A few years ago, I might have said no. Sega, after all, still hasn't gotten around to localizing <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/113605-Sega-Says-No-Valkyria-Chronicles-III-For-Western-Gamers>Valkyria Chronicles 3 (which is a shame because it's supposed to be great). That said, last year's PC port of the original game <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138590-Valkyria-Chronicles-Tops-Steam-Charts-After-Release#&gid=gallery_3512&pid=1>did very well on Steam and it's possible that its success could be enough to convince Sega to give the new sequel a chance in this market as well. Keep your fingers crossed guys.

If for some reason Sega (or Sony for this helps them too) is here reading Escapist articles...

I would buy a PS4 for a Valkyria Chronicles sequel. Hell, I almost bought a PSP for Valkyria Chronicles 2 and no one owned a PSP!!! (I heard it was kind of bad so I ended up deciding against it but if it was as good as the first one, I would have bought a PSP to play it)

Don't say that, they'll make it a PS4 exclusive, its gotta come out on PC.

Hey Sega you saw how well Valkyria Chronicles did on Steam, don't make the mistake of making this PS4 exclusive, more platforms means more people to buy your game, plus VC already has a reputation for being great nowadays.

Oh you mean I can play babeh's first WW II game without having to go over my friend's house? I'll try to contain my joy.

*Sigh* That was mean. I TRIED to like this game, I really really did, but the emotional whiplash was just too much. I hope people enjoy the remaster and IV, hell I hope IV is actually enjoyable enough for me to play it.

Christmas came early, apparently, I honestly never thought this would happen. It's good to see that the franchise hasn't been put out to pasture. After they mad that Valkyria Chronicles card game I was worried...

I will absolutely be purchasing this, and the re-release. I enjoyed the story, but the gameplay alone was worth the price of admission. I hadn't seen anything like it before, and it was a blast.

From what I heard, the characters were shit in 2. Relying on cameos from the first game and having litterally younger siblings as the cast. And it showed as it felt like a younger sibling.

I had heard similar things about the story and plot and that it delved into goofy high school drama stuff. Wasn't interested. The gameplay was supposed to be good though. I still consider buying it for that.

Good news everyone!

Valkyria Chronicles 2 wasn't as good as the first one but it is a damn good game on its own.

I think we may want to dowse our expectations. The new game doesn't look or sound like the old games. It's not going to be turn base, it doesn't look like WW2, you can't have more then 5 people.. You know just look at it yourself.

I would have loved to see a new game that played closer to the original. Fix some things like enemies shooting at you when your standing still, and make it quicker and easier to move people. I would have also liked to see more vehicles in play on larger maps. A more open campaign with more squad build choices. Then more interactive parts on the enemies and map.(It sounds like that will be a bigger factor in the new game, but it just sounds so different overall.)

I wanted to like Valkyria Chronicles. To its credit, I managed to make it most of the way through the game before finally getting fed up with its excessively anime-y nature.

The game itself is surprisingly good and absolutely gorgeous, I just couldn't stomach the sheer amount of stereotypical anime tropes that this game plays razor straight.

The heck did I just read? I don't know, judging by the screen shots it could go one of two ways.

Either they turn this into a generic dungeon crawling RPG, which is what they seem to be implying, or they turn this into a Dynasty Warriors style action game. The screen shots seem to show two large armies fighting, so it may be that you lead a five man squad, but are part of a larger battle. I would be fine with this, especially if you have some control over the strategy of the battle. I felt like Valkyria Chronicles had too many soldiers as it is, and most of them were paper thin and rarely used. Having a smaller, better developed cast could fix that problem, especially if they have unique abilities. I just don't want to lose the strategy aspect of the original game.

It could turn out to be a good game. (The idea of playing one part in a large battle sounds neat and I can't think of many games that do that off the top of my head.) It just sounds like a completely different game.

The too many people thing is something that I kind of agree with but don't. The game wasn't really good at handling all it's people. You didn't have much time to give them the attention that you kind of wanted too I mean just moving your units into position for a strike could be five minutes. (A game might only last 3 rounds but 30 minutes.) On the other hand, the large number of people gave the game a unique gameplay element. Most TBS games focus on really small groups, or really big ones. VC sits in both camps and it's noticeable how macro and micro it gets. (It's a problem, but also really cool.)

I think I just hate the new look the most too.

I think the original game had the perfect number of units per battle. Like you said, they did a good job of balancing large scale and small scale battles. I just meant that your battalion had way more people then you could ever use. You had a massive roster of about 50 soldiers, and from that you could choose about half of them to be in your unit. Out of those twenty or so soldiers you could use about seven or eight on an actual mission. It just felt large and unwieldy, and most of the characters were redundant. I just used the main cast, and picked about four or five side characters to fill out my ranks.

Having a small cast of unique characters could be an interesting way of stream lining the game play, while also giving each character more development. Alternatively they could add support conversations, like Fire Emblem, with more side missions thrown in.

The most important thing is the strategy. As long as they don't lose that, I'm fine. If they reduce it to five characters killing and entire army then that would ruin the whole series. I want to see them develop the original game play, not abandon it.

I always assumed they gave you so many because they expected you to kill them. :p I thought the game did a decent job characterizing so many though. I mean they all had a custom face, background, battle calls, even their stats told you a story about what kind of a person they were.

I wanted to like this game a lot more but once I realized the ranking system was based purely on speed and every battle mostly involved cheese it was hard to do so. That and I've never had a story go off the rails so hard as this game. I couldn't take it seriously towards the end.

Hey, at least VC3 got a rather complete fan translation.

It is a shame the series never really took off.

Neat. Hopefully by the time I start and finish Valkyria Chronicles, PC port of VC4 will be announced.

I want this NOW! I want it so much.

For years I considered Valkyria Chronicles the best game on PS3 and even today I don't think it has much competition.

I bought a PSP mostly just for Valkyria Chronicles 2, and whilst I think it was a worse game then 1 I still think it was a good game. I just wish they bring 3 to England at some point.

Here's hoping the game will be made up of a diverse cast exceeding the age of 17, VC2 let me down so bad with those animu shenanigans. Never got to play 3 for obvious reasons but I here the cast was a little more diverse... even if that gun the Darcsen girl was using seemed kinda silly.

Sad that the original character designer isn't in this project and it is more of an alternate spin off, but it still looks interesting and might be fun to play.
