Thor: Ragnarok Might Aim For Guardians of the Galaxy-Level Comedy

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/672/672047.jpgThor: Ragnarok's Chris Hemsworth hopes his apocalyptic finale will have a similar sense of humor to last year's Guardians of the Galaxy.

When your movie title references the most metal apocalypse ever depicted by ancient religions, you probably don't imagine it to address light-hearted comedy. Yet that's exactly what Chris Hemsworth hopes <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/thor%20ragnarok?os=thor+ragnarok>Thor: Ragnarok will achieve in 2017. In a recent interview, the actor revealed his desire that Thor's finale will combine the action and humor of last year's smash hit: <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/guardians%20of%20the%20galaxy?os=guardians+of+the+galaxy>Guardians of the Galaxy.

"I think [Thor: Ragnarok] needs to be injected with that sort of smart wit and unexpected kind of humor, kind of what James Gunn came in and did with Guardians," Hemworth told Cinema Blend. "It was like off center and unpredictable, and I think we can definitely use a dose of that, you know?"

While Thor and Thor: The Dark World had comic relief moments, they played a limited role - usually in the form of Loki's banter, Thor adjusting to mortal life, or Erik Selvig constantly losing items of clothing. (Okay, not all of these were necessarily good comic relief moments.) If Ragnaok places a stronger emphasis on combining action and humor, it might help lighten the darker tone which soured some fans when Dark World rolled out. And it doesn't necessarily have to impact the action: Guardians had no shortage of impressive action scenes itself, not to mention quieter, emotional moments.

"I feel we had less of the sort of the naivety or fun or humor that the first [Thor] might have had. I wish we had more of that in the second," Hemsworth continued. "We've done regal. We've done Shakespeare, and we've shown that. I think now it's time to go, 'Ok, cool. Let's try something different,' and Taika just had such a brilliant sort of take and funny kind of ideas about where we could [go], how we could do that."

It's also entirely possible Marvel is already planning this approach for Ragnarok. That last Hemsworth quote references Taika Waititi, a New Zealand director and comedian being considered for the film. Couple that detail with rumors that Ragnarok's plot <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/142859-Thor-Ragnarok-Features-The-Hulk>features the cosmic road trip of Thor and Hulk, and the comedy potential practically writes itself. Marvel will obviously have to share more official details before we know for sure, but I suspect fans will welcome light-hearted banter into Thor's cosmic battlegrounds.

So it's going to be another Marvel movie?

I mean, honestly, the level of "comedy" in Guardians isn't particularly new to Marvel. And yes, I know it wasn't typical of the Thor movies, but my point is less "this is every movie" and more "they really don't need to do this in every movie."

It's sort of the difference between Jessica Jones being dark and virtually every DC movie being dark. With that kind of homogeneity, why would I bother to watch everything?

I can't wait for them to announce Civil War will introduce Slapstick as Cap's wacky sidekick. Actually, now I wonder how they could do this with the next Avengers movie, as well.

I can see some banter between Thor and Banner and some of Bruce's shenanigans in alien society working out pretty decently.

Let me translate that real quick:

"I think we need to do exactly what we've been doing in every single film in the entire MCU, except, you know, better."

Because the Marvel films have been oh so serious so far...

Why is everyone stating this is more of the same? Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant Man stand out as full on comedies mixed in a science fantasy adventure and heist respectively. That's not anywhere near the same thing as having some levity or sense of humour.

Winter Soldier was pretty serious even if it had some humor in it.

Guardians had comedy all the way through which Thor 2 didn't, but I'd place the final fight sequence from Thor 2 (Thinking With Portals) right up there with anything in Guardians for comedy. That's some of the best action comedy I've seen since the Kung Fu Pandas (don't look at me like that...yeah it's overhyped like any dumb kids movie, but the action scenes were hilarious...).

That scene makes the entire movie worth it. Hands-down one of the most imaginative, best-executed sequences in the entire MCU.

Kinda interesting how they are going to make light out of the situation assuming "Ragnarok" is what I think it's going to be.

You two just liked watching Mjolnir bouncing around the atmosphere knowing if it could speak it would be going "HOLD STILL FOR A SECOND!"

As for me, the issue with the comedy in Dark World wasn't it's infrequency, it was outside of a few parts (one of which was entirely unintentional aka the coat rack) the comedy was largely forced in to try and relieve tension. It had an off-putting effect where the tense moments should have stayed tense and the comedy just wasn't funny in the situation. The end result is that to me at least the overall feeling was "meh".

Yes, the story of a defrosted nazi cyborg fighting Chris Evans really struck those dramatic chords.

Unrelated note - is adj. "nazi" capitalized?

Just kinda fast-forwarded through all the parts about government snooping/privacy issues, criminal profiling, police states, murder for "the greater good", free will, etc. for all the Winter Soldier vs. Cap POW!/BAM!/ZAP! scenes, eh?

Took the words right out of my mouth. To be fair, the action in the film is really good too :p.

The "Well done, you just decapitated your Grandfather" scene always makes me laugh, and i do have to admit that fighting with Portals thing was pretty cool, but yeh outside of Loki and the portals the humour did feel pretty forced.

I saw that movie. It's called Three Days of the Condor, and it's the reason why Robert Redford is in Marvel Movie N°9.

Remember that just because you drop a few conciliatory nods towards this or that issue doesn't mean your movie is about that. That just because a movie uses certain semantics doesn't mean the syntaxis isn't that of a lesser superhero movie designed to keep the seat warm for bigger budget tanks starring RDJ. And that for all the clamor about its totally serious themes, the movie promptly washes its hands clean from them, solving the corruption within one fictional branch of the government... by having another fictional branch of the government come save the day. What risks this movie took.

And I didn't fast-forward to POW, BAM and ZAP. The movie did it for me.

The simple solution is to make Loki an actual trickster, by which I mean like the archtype. Tricksters are supposed to be fun. They feed people massive overdoses of laxatives, dress up like women to seduce other women (this works with varied, but hilarious results), generally don't care about etiquette and flaunt this about themselves, that sort of thing (all of these are, in fact, real events from actual trickster myths around the world). I've been saying from the front, they should make Loki fun, not just a pretty-boy with daddy-issues.

I have to be honest, the first one was better because it was light hearted in some places and the heavy stuff was really heavy. But Dark World had very little of the light hearted stuff and it definitely negatively effected the movie for me. Essentially, Thor was a big cry baby and it was annoying.

Now, I can't wait for the funniest part of the movie being the Hulk geeking the fuck out about over Ragnarok's full power... or some kind of elevator-type scene with Thor and Hulk while "elevator music" is playing and the "Stan Lee" character makes a joke about Hulk "owning a planet"...

Other than that, if it's going to be GOTG-level comedy, will one of the fight sequences have Kriss Korss's Jump song in it?
