Mario Kart? Really? I mean, sure, it'll entertain people all right but holy balls is hardly any skill involved at all since the random items have and have always been biased towards later placing players. Not to mention, it has just as much potential as effing Mario Party to end friendships and family ties.
Portal 2 is an amazing co-op game but I don't know if it's a "family game" per se. Some may say it looks "too crazy". XP
Minecraft is too slow-paced for a family game. It takes a long while to build anything worth seeing and by the time you do, everyone will have lost interest. That, or some of your more annoying family members might take to griefing. XP
And then you listed... Mario Party. That wretched game of scum and villainy. You did not just go there.
My Picks (In order of age, lowest to highest):
Super Smash Bros.
Gauntlet Legacy
Borderlands 2
Halo 3 or Reach for Firefight
