Peter Jackson Will Direct An Episode of Doctor Who

Peter Jackson was already well-known for his work on <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/lord%20of%20the%20rings?os=lord+of+the+rings>The Lord of the Rings and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/the%20hobbit?os=the+hobbit>The Hobbit films, but now he's turning his attention to another beloved franchise: Doctor Who. That news is exciting enough, but what's hilarious is how Jackson made the announcement. Instead of relying on some BBC press release, he published a Facebook video where Peter Capaldi arrives at Jackson's home as the Doctor to ensure his work contract is signed. And of course, since trouble follows the Doctor wherever he goes, this trip is no exception.

The video introduces Jackson as he sits at home polishing his Oscars when his daughter informs him that he hasn't been replying to Stephen Moffat's emails. After admitting he doesn't reply to "incoherent" emails, Peter Capaldi's Doctor arrives with a written contract in hand that can't be ignored. Although he certainly tries. The video is an entertaining watch, filled with several self-depricating jokes fans of Jackson and Moffat's work should pick up on. (The post-it filled copy of The Silmarillion on Jackson's desk is an especially great touch.)

Jackson had originally expressed interest in filming a Doctor Who episode during Matt Smith's run but for some reason seemed a little too busy to get involved. With Doctor Who's ninth series wrapping up, Jackson's episode will likely arrive during the tenth season. That is, unless Jackson convinces the crew to film the episode for six months in New Zealand after all.

That utterly contradicts the no season in 2016 I've been hearing for months. I mean I might have read an article a few weeks back talking about Peter Jackson that still confirmed a no season in 2016.

Or is the Peter Jackson one a hidden time-locked one that will exist because there is no season in 2016 and thus never existed? Unless you have a personal paradox machine to go into a a region of time where it might exist?

In May the BBC signed a 1 year contract extension with Moffat. I strongly doubt they are going to pay him to sit on his backside for a year. What I have seen is that season 10 will be on later in the year, finishing in 2017. This is the BBC moving Dr Who to avoid the ratings juggernauts of Strictly Come Dancing and the X Factor. Moffat and Capaldi both have publicly complained about the Dr's spot on the schedule and they have moved the show accordingly.

I'm kind of hoping for some ludicrous dead alive/brain dead zombie action as opposed to something sweeping and epic. I like the funny and silly Jackson moments as opposed to the epic sad ones.

Unfortunately, since it's still going to be Moffat behind the reigns I have no doubt that it will suck. I doubt even an oscar-winning director can save moffat's awful writing.

Peter Jackson certainly shed a lot of weight....and I greatly enjoyed that video. I do hope he directs an episode of Dr Who ( whatever his interpretation of an episode is); it would be interesting to see his slant on it.
