Capcom Explains Sagat's Absence in Street Fighter V

Sagat won't be in the new Street Fighter because there are "too many similar characters".

full character roster [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/street%20fighter?os=street+fighter], as well as the first wave of DLC characters, one subset of fans are quite disappointed: Sagat mains. Sagat has been a mainstay of the series, appearing in every main Street Fighter title since the original. However, he will not be in Street Fighter V, and now Capcom has explained why.

"It's because there are many characters that perform similarly," developer Yoshinori Ono told Famitsu [http://blog.esuteru.com/archives/8446127.html]. "For this launch and its next update, we wanted to have a good balance of characters. Since we didn't want to just blindly increase the number of characters, it was a bitter decision that had to be made."

But don't lose hope, Sagat fans, for while the muay thai expert won't appear in the game at launch, "I understand that there are also many who wish to see other characters besides Sagat, such as Blanka and more. There's a possibility that we may add more characters in some form later, so please look forward to that," said Ono.

He confirmed that there will be no additional characters released in 2016, aside from the six previously announced (Alex, Guile, Ibuki, Balrog, Juri and Urien).

Good, we all still have nightmares of Vanilla Sagat back in the first version of SF4.
That and I don't know what they could do with his moves in order to make them more interesting, I mean, he has 2 fireballs and there is next to no difference between them aside from the height at which he shoots it.

Yea we wouldn't want a bunch of characters with similar moves that aren't Ryu, Ken, Dan, Akuma, or Gouken

While I know what you mean, Sagat is actually a lot more of a Shoto clone then even Dan is.
The only thing that really sets him apart would be his Tiger Knee but even then, it can be compared to the Hurricane kick.
That and even Ryu has more differences in his fireballs then Sagat.

Dang it, Capcom, including someone who has been in every main entry is not "blindly increasing the number of characters." He's iconic; omitting him would be like omitting Luigi from Smash because he's too much like Dr. Mario.

P.S. Thanks

They could have just said ryu killed him or something, make a cool little story. Just not having him for no reason annoys me a little.

Nah, Ryu wouldn't do that.
Dan maybe.

Correction: Sagat did not appear in Street Fighter III. (Guess that goes for the article as well.)

He doesn't appear in SF5 because by now in the lore he retired from fighting presumably.

Good move decreasing the number of shoto style characters. SF5 has done a good job making Ken feel different from Ryu, and really Sagat's niche (fireball, uppercut, slow, long range) is much more suited to a new character than rehashing the same Ryu storyline we've had for 25 years.

From a marketing perspective, the face of the franchise is 90% Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li; those are the guys you want on the box art, you want them to be used on streams, and you want them to be special. If you want Ryu's super fireball to be awesome, you can't have 5 other characters with super fireballs. If you want Ken's uppercut and hurricane kick to be awesome, you can't give Sagat better versions.

If anything Dr. Mario should not be in the game and merely be an Alt. Costume for Mario.

"Slower, heavier Mario" is hardly enough distinction for a new character, especially when it translates into "worse Mario". Its just like how people feel that Lucina and Chrom should've just been Alt. Skins for Marth, rather than making Lucina a separate, but shittier version of Marth.

Pls Ono no one except you wants Blanka in the game
Pretty much everyone seems to prefer his replacement; Laura.

For reasons unknown.

Nice work Capcom.
Now if you knew anything about SFV, you would know that all DLC can be purchased with in game currency. Meaning while you could pay real money to buy characters you could also use " fight money" to buy DLC.

Apart from Evil Ryu or Oni. They'd be okay.

They could have dropped Birdy because no one will play that retard. That is unless they give him some cheap ass moves that make him great in tournaments.

Why the hell is Alex DLC instead of being base game?
Seriously, the only reason to put Zangief in over him is to appease the people who grew up with SF: II, and who cares about those guys?
