"PC players are a passionate, devoted audience and we know they'll embrace the version created for their systems."

It was in an announcement today [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/165659-Rise-of-The-Tomb-Raider-PC-Release-January], Square Enix revealed that the latest installment in the Tomb Raider franchise would be available for PC and Windows 10 gamers on January 28. Rise of the Tomb Raider will remain an Xbox One and Xbox 360 console exclusive until Holiday 2016, when it makes its way to PS4.

"The PC release of Rise of the Tomb Raider continues the positive momentum from our highly successful partnership and collaboration with Microsoft for the launch on Xbox One and Xbox 360," said Scot Amos, co-Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics, in the announcement.

"PC players are a passionate, devoted audience and we know they'll embrace the version created for their systems," said Ron Rosenberg, co-Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics.

The PC launch includes a $59.99 standard edition and an $89.99 digital deluxe edition that includes "nearly all current and future DLC." A $149.99 collector's edition is also being offered, and includes a 12-inch figurine, replicas of Lara's journal and jade necklace, and a steel case.

According to Microsoft [http://news.xbox.com/2016/01/04/greatest-games-extends-to-2016/], Rise of the Tomb Raider has sold over 1 million copies, along with every other title in their exclusive 2015 holiday games line-up.

So we had to wait longer and still have to pay full price?

Hah, no.

Wanted to play this originally when it launched but didn't have a Xbox One. Now I'll wait for it to be 60 dollars for the whole thing.

Normally I wouldn't care. I'm all for giving developers money for DLC to continue supporting games I love, but this nonsense annoys me.

Edit - I'll laugh myself to sleep if they make PS4 players pay 90 dollars for everything a year after release.

Yeah, especially since the steam version will have seen either a markdown or a big sale around that time.

OT: At least square is bringing their games to pc and on a platform nearly everyone uses, even if they are a bit on the late side. I'm more concerned that they make a point to mention windows 10 in there: is it going to be required?

Tomb Raider feat. Lara Croft was the first PC game I ever bought. So let me make this quick. I have never in my life been less interested in the release of a Tomb Raider game. The reboot completely killed my interest in the series (not even Angel of Darkness managed to do that!).

It was released the same day as Fallout 4. It can't have been that successful, can it? Even pornhub couldn't compete against Fallout 4. *Shaking someone next to him* EVEN PORNHUB.

Rise of the Tomb Raider would have to get the 2015 award for 'Biggest AAA game that no one played'

Seriously, excluding technical disasters like Arkham Shite, RotTR would have to be one of the biggest release flops of 2015.

Minimum specs are on Steam. It's not very demanding. It also supports Dx12 and that should in theory result in better performance on Windows 10.

OS: Windows 7 64bit
Processor: Intel Core i3-2100 or AMD equivalent
Memory: 6 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 650 2GB or AMD HD7770 2GB
DirectX: Version 11
Storage: 25 GB available space

Looking forward to this. What's especially nice is that this time the pirates won't get a free ride, if you want to play this, you'll have to pay. Denuvo means it may take several months or up to a year to crack (see reddit "crackstatus", especially "just cause 3" and "fifa 15"). We should see significantly increased sales as a result, and hopefully the studio will then be able to afford making more quality tomb raider games.

#Denuvo #EndofPiracy

Ok, but seriously, why the hell is no youtube pundit, news outlet, or other commentator discussing the recently proven effectiveness of Denuvo and it's impact on the games industry and the future of piracy? It's not like piracy hasn't been talked about before and big releases going uncracked for months on end seems very notable to me.

Oh and don't give me bullshit that denuvo has been cracked and post some shitty articles, because it's simply not true. Also I don't care that its anti-tamper and not DRM, it does the same thing, no release available on piratebay -> more profits for the game studios -> bigger better games for us.

I'll pop it on my wishlist and get it on a sale, just as I did with the other Tomb Raider (Which I really liked).

Because its not actually doing anything to increase sales?

Like, unless publishers have the data to prove that DRM works to increase sales and just aren't showing it for whatever reason, its not increasing sales. Its just wasting money to stop people who wont pay for something anyway from playing the game.

Sure, its cool and all that the games stay uncracked for a long time. Good for them. Until you can show some sort of tangible benefit to it other than piracy numbers staying low (and sales numbers staying where they were previously) then its still pointless.

But you are wrong. It is making paying customers out of at least some pirates, if the comments on the crackstatus reddit are to be believed. Of course it may not be a significant amount of people for it to actually matter, but we don't know yet. I am aware that many pundits have maintained that DRM does nothing to stop piracy or increase sales, but that it only hurts paying customers by making the product worse and placates investors. Well, here we would finally have a possiblity for a case study, the rare opportunity to study what happens when the security cannot be cracked.

And we did see. Denuvo isn't new. It was in DA:I and Fifa in 2014. Sales didn't magically increase back then either.

On top of that you're basing this entire idea of magic sales numbers on a reddit thread? Really? That's like trying to use a Twitter poll to gauge how much money you cost The Force Awakens.

They're not. That's why we need the data. Besides, almost the entirety of sales these days depends on pre-orders. And pirates will never pre-order if they so much as suspect that they can get something for free.

Also, Denuvo was cracked. If a game doesn't get cracked it's probably because it's not a very big or important title. Hackers got other shit to hack and crack. They like to focus on very big titles. I think MGS V used Denuvo and it was cracked really fast.

So it's very unlikely DRM will effect day 1 sales. And let's be honest here until good DRM is widespread a few games having it is unlikely to have much impact on consumer habits as regular pirates just won't play that game.

However where it could have an impact is during steam sales or the price has been slashed considerably. I think I picked up Tomb Raider for less than a tenner as I just didn't want it badly enough until then. How many people pirate on release because they can't afford it at the time and then never buy it when they can?

Honestly though most of this will be a drop in ocean I imagine. Just look at Witcher 3 I don't think no DRM has adversely effected their sales. On equal measure I don't think it significantly increased them either...

Yes. And it turns away some would-be-customers from the game.

This may be justified. Granted, we don't know exactly how Denuvo works, but there is some speculation that the games that use it may end up being unplayable some day when you move on to better hardware that Denuvo won't be able to recognize. It may or may not be true though.

It seems that as far as PC releases go, whenever a pre-order includes a statue of some kind, the game has been utter crap.

Or the statue has been crap. One of the two always though.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA No, how about you knock some of the price off or fork over some free DLC to make up for your "brilliant" decision to keep the game from us? I don't feel bad at all that the game had poor sales, Square Enix brought it on themselves when they made the game a timed exclusive, at this point? I could care less
