Payday 2 Developer's Walking Dead Shooter Delayed

Overkill's The Walking Dead will arrive in the second half of 2017.

Overkill, the folks behind the intially-awesome all the way back in 2014 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/161161-Payday-2-Microtransactions-Not-Going-Anywhere]. At the time, we got a pretty sweet reveal trailer (which you can see to the right) but since then we haven't really heard anything about it. And it looks like we'll continue to not hear much about it for a while, as Overkill has today announced that the game has been delayed into late 2017.

Buried within an announcement [http://www.starbreeze.com/2016/01/starbreeze-and-smilegate-in-long-term-strategic-partnership/] of the studio's partnership with South Korean developer Smilegate, was the following nugget:

"Overkills's The Walking Dead will be expanded with more content where an Asian version will be developed for simultaneous launch with the western version. To maximize the new opportunities, Starbreeze, 505 Games and Skybound have decided to release the game in all markets during the second half of 2017."

A shame for anyone who was really looking forward to the game (especially following the disappointment of the last Walking Dead game [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/7074-The-Walking-Dead-Survival-Instinct]). Here's hoping the extra time will help make it the super polished co-op Walking Dead shooter we deserve.

Another DLC delivery platform.

Since this is going to be a co-op, I reckon that means it will just be a Left 4 Dead clone. I am not expecting great things from this game.

A Left 4 Dead clone where your end of round rewards are lockboxes containing hilariously imbalanced weapons for the players that cough up a couple hundred bucks? Yeah... no thanks.

I wouldn't buy a game by these lying sacks of crap again even if my life depended on it. Go to hell, Overkill.

This is where I would normally say it can't be worse then the previous Walking Dead FPS, but at this point with this studio, that abused name, and some oddball "maximizing the markets" scheme I expect things to actually get worse.

On the upside they do make purchasing decisions real easy.

Was excited when it was announced.

Then PAYDAY 2 became little more than a glorified platform for DLC and microtransactions. Now I am not so excited.

... 505 Games?! If Overkill themselves weren't enough of a red flag already, the appearance of those buffoons is like a big neon sign boldly declaring to any potential customer, "Run the fuck away and don't look back!!"

No...you can't just go back to zombie co-op FPS's. That is just backwards thinking. We already explored every interesting angle of zombie stories and games, yet they are proceeding like it's 1999 and making this as if it's never been done before? What a splash it will make in the waters of game creativity. I can hardly contain my indifference.

$4.99 says it is because they are trying to get goat DLC ready for it.
I'm going to guess it's because their income has suddenly flat lined after the Payday 2 BS. Those aggressive Micro Store tactics always go the same way, loads of money for about a month and then the cliff (See Battlefield Heroes and Play4Free, actually don't because they're both shut down).

So looking for some extra income their game now has a global release, I'd hate to be the people who paid for that.
