International Prices for HTC and Valve's Vive Announced

Here is what HTC and Valve's Vive will cost around the world.

Earlier in the month, we learned what Valve and HTC's Vive VR headset [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/166526-800-Price-Tag-for-HTC-Vive] would cost in the United States: $799. However, The Escapist is read by gamers of all different nationalities (including this writer!) and thus we are happy to report that HTC has just announced the international prices for its headset.

Here's a breakdown of each region, and what the Vive will cost there:

Additionally, HTC has announced that pre-orders will come with Google's Tilt Brush, which you can see in action in the video above.

That means that pre-ordering the Vive gets you the unit itself, two hand controllers, two base stations, a copy of Fantastic Contraption and Job Simulator, and now the Google Tilt Brush.

Pre-orders for the Vive open on February 29 [http://www.htcvive.com/jp/], and shipping will begin on April 5.

I don't ask this sarcastically but with genuine curiosity: The price is a little high compared to what?

I mean, I know it's expensive as all hell, but new tech tends to be expensive. Especially when the device(s) use other, top-of-the-line tech. Given what goes into these HMDs and other systems I'm actually surprised they cost as little as $600~$800 USD.

It depends on how much each company embraces things like OpenVR and how often they decide to sign exclusivity deals for certain software packages.

Also bare in mind that only one VR device will have a roomscale experience. The others may have it some day, but "when?" is the question.

Well.. there's the usual matter of whether prices include tax or not - US prices generally don't, while euro prices generally do. No idea whether this is the case here.

Also when did Belgium, Czech, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweeden all leave the EU. I wonder if Czech is near the Czech republic and when Sweeden started being spelt with double E.

yeah thats the base price.. add in shipping and customs adding GST and you are looking upwards of $1400 AUD

To be fair, most of that is GST (10%). The US price doesn't include sales tax, which varies from state to state

Okay, so going by the price conversions places like New Zealand actually get a really good deal (949NZD instead of 799USD), while Europe gets royally screwed (899Euro, or just under 1000USD). Who are they trying to kid?

Well I had a feeling by Occulus pricing VR was setting a steady course into the territory of "it'd be nice but there's no way in hell I can rationalize that purchase".

This kinda confirms it.

I'll be a late adopter for sure and by that point I'll probably be making dreamy eyes at the Hololens instead.

Guess I'll end up as a 2d peasant sneered down upon by the VR master race.
At least my bank manager won't be placing a kill order on my head though.

900?, they must be fucking crazy. I love the chance that actual viable VR is coming on the market but with prices like this its gonna fail hard and fast unless they drop rapidly. For these kind of prices its half of a extremely powerful gaming computer itslf or an actual decent humble one in full. Way to kill the tech before its even released, i sincerely hope im wrong and prices will drop fairly fast but it does seem like their just playing their critics right in the hand.

The Euro and GBP price are roughly in line with the dollar price plus twenty percent tax (US list prices never quote tax for... reasons). So for once the pricing is actually quite fair, as opposed to the usual massive not-America tax.

Wait a second. I've basically been hiding in a cave so far as politics is concerned (cut me some slack; it's an election year), so I suppose I could've just missed this, but- when did the US conquer Australia and New Zealand? Don't they have their own currencies?
