Allegiant - Sets Up Dominoes to Knock Down Next Year

The third chapter in the Divergent movie franchise promises us it'll give us stuff, but does so in a trolling manner, not letting us have anything of value until a year later.

I can't fucking wait for this trend of Young Adult Novel Adaptations to end. Every - single - one has the same plot, it's just wearing a different hat.

Hunger Games: Special Snowflake fights against the establishment in a dystopian world.

Maze Runner: Special Snowflake fights against the establishment in a dystopian world, this time with mazes.

Divergent: Special Snowflake fights against the establishment in a dystopian world, this time with job classes.

Twilight: Special Snowflake becomes a Super Special Snowflake and fights against the establishment...not in a dystopian world, but this time we have emotionless giant pixies vampires.

How and why do these movies keep getting made? Is the target audience that addicted to this plot template? Evidently the answer to that question is an emphatic "Yes!"

And they all break up the final fucking movie up into two parts! Just because Harry Potter did it since it had 6 previous books and a 500+ page novel's worth of plot to resolve doesn't mean every series should get it. Fuck, from what I hear Divergent's final book is the smallest by far, yet they're still stretching the fucker into two parts.

That's certainly another beef I have with these movies.

To quote Jeremy from CinemaSins:
Splitting the last book makes both final movies suck. Part one is going to be all build-up with no pay-off (as, according to the review, this movie does) while part two is going to be all climax with no build-up. It's like taking a girl to your bedroom and making sweet, passionate love to her and just before that special moment you pull out and say "Wasn't that fun? Now you wait here and I'll come back in a year to jizz all over your face for two hours."

Damn. The Special trope is played out in YA fiction as it is, but when you start framing it in terms of 'genetic purity', then your subtext just became creepily... text.

YOu know, I'd rather have these movies telling young girls to fight the system and that people are unique then the bullshit that was coming out around 2006 or so.

These books are just awful. For the longest time this series was the first three spots on my worst books of all time list. They only JUST got edged out of #1 recently by Star Wars Aftermath. Seriously, the writing, world building, and plot are all *** and complete nonsense. How **** like this and Maze Runner get movies while more deserving books sit on the shelf is beyond me. I hope it bombs big and stops them from making any more. :p

Watched the first one. Had to lie down for a while to get rid of the migraine the horrible movie gave me. Oh ya, it was that bad. Haven't even bothered from there.

If you guys want to see a savage takedown of this whole trend of movies, go to Screw Attack and see MovieBob's new series "In Bob We Trust", especially the episode "Diss-Topia". He brilliantly sums up everything wrong with these types of books/movies.

I admire your courage in seeing this one. Loved the first Divergent, the second one was HORRIBLE... I've learned my lesson from The Hunger Games that only the first YA Novel movie in a series is good. The rest is crap.

Personally, I thought the first Hunger Games movie was the weakest of the bunch. Then again, I thought the third Hunger Games book and the last movie of the series were the best respectively, so there you go.

While I'm commenting, I've only read the first Divergent novel. Thought it was okay, no real desire to read onwards from it. That said, as someone who's done creative writing courses which included analysis of the YA genre (working in a library probably helps), I can't help but feel sorry for the stigma people hurl on it while the superhero genre (bleh) churns on as a hemogenous blob within the filmscape. :(

Sounds like my mom will enjoy some aspects of this... when she gets to watch it in her room...

Other than that, it's too late for this series to get me to see it because it has Jeff Daniels in it...
