Trailer For Tim Burton's New Film Has A Lot of Peculiar Children


The new trailer for Tim Burton's new film looks like a cross between Harry Potter and the X-Men, and it is downright impressive.

Anything from the mind of Tim Burton will usually leave you asking yourself "what did I just watch?", while at the same time smiling at the weird satisfaction you got from watching it. The trailer for his new film, Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, is no different.

Starring Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender's Game) and Eva Green (Sin City, 300, Casino Royale) and Dame Judi Dench, the trailer follows a couple of teens into a dark, mysterious realm where children with "peculiar" abilities are cared for by a headmistress with her own flights of fantasy. Burton calls her "a scary Mary Poppins." Complete with ominous ending, the trailer definitely looks and feels like a Burton creation.

"When I was first approached to direct Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children I was given a summary of the novel with all of the photos in the book," Burton says on his official Facebook page [https://www.facebook.com/TimBurton/posts/10153991742703633]. "I was immediately intrigued by the haunting and mysterious pictures in Ransom Rigg's novel and knew I wanted to tell the story of those kids. A girl, lighter than air, a boy with bees living in his stomach, a woman who turned into a bird ... it was a world I wanted to explore. So I made a film about them."

As Burton said, the film is based on Rigg's 2011 best-selling novel based on a series of odd and eerie photos the author collected prior to penning the story. "They're quite compelling," Burton told Entertainment Weekly [http://www.ew.com/article/2016/03/04/miss-peregrine-tim-burton-photos]. "They remind me of old horror movies, or dreams."

Burton continues to be drawn to films about odd children, also having done Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. "Weird kids," he said. "It's something that I've dealt with and been interested in for a while. It's a weird family."

Initial blind reaction: Holy shit! A movie that isn't a reboot or sequel that and doesn't look like piss!

It's way too early to say but it looks good upon first viewing. At the very least I'm not getting "This is so gonna suck" vibes from the trailer like I've gotten from so many other recent movies.

At least it hasn't got Johnny Depp. Burton's films of late have been declining in quality and just seems to be making weird for weird's sake. I think Burton should do something like Lynch's Elephant Man or Straight Story and tell a conventional story well. I would hope that would stop his films being a collection of quirks with no real heart. That said I will probably go and see it to lust after Eva Green, if nothing else.

OT- Ok I admit, reading the header I was prepare to resist but after watching the trailer, it got me interested. I don't know why but it feel kinda original eventhought it isn't.

EDIT- Ok a quick read on wiki and oh cool! The book is set in Wales (where I lived)!

Okay, it's a little cliche to yell "Simpsons did it!", but seriously?

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, a place where children with special abilities can live free from a world that hates and fears them. That's not at all similar to:

Charles Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters, a place where children with special abilities can live free from a world that hates and fears them.

It's probably different enough that it's not a ripoff, but the similarity in that title is hilarious.

It's slightly more interesting then X-MEN, though to be fair, I never really got into X-MEN.

There's a plot point about

the home existing in a stable Time Loop(stuck during WW2), while the protagonists is a normal kid from the present day. Each day is the same that that repeats over and over again, but the people living in the house retain their memories of the previous run through the loop, so they can live their lives at the same age forever as long as the time loop continues to reset.

Big Eyes worked because of Waltz and Adam's strong performances, I dont think that Burton added much. The Elephant man is a much stronger film and any director would make a name for themselves with that as their first big budget film. Big Eyes is a so so film in an established directors work. To be fair Lynch did have Freddie Francis as cinematographer and Burton has never forged a relationship with a veteran cinematographer.

Based on the book of the same name, it's a really weird and interesting story, the book has images throughout which gives you a sense of what the characters look like which makes it a really unique read. I wasn't even aware there are now 3 books in the series so will pick up the others at some point.
