I think we can agree that the first 2 movies were at least the closest to being faithful to the games.

Also the one thing to scared me the most about the first movie was the Laser Death Room.

Just the idea of it is horrifying.

Yeah...no.

1, I agree with. Zombies are released, they're slowly shambling (key word on "shambling," I'll get back to that later.)

2, I used to love this moment, but looking back, it's stupid. From an in-universe standpoint, we have Jill walking into a police station and, to their eyes, executing civilians. We, the audience, know they're zombies, but the scene shows that the police have yet to realize that they're undead. So tell me, in real life, what's to stop the police from firing on what they could rightly assume to be a crazy person in a city that's already full of crazy people?

Also, from a character standpoint, the movie sells Jill as being "badass." Now, Jill doesn't have the most in-depth personality in the world in the games, but when I think of her, if I was describing her character, "sense of justice" would be the first phrase that comes to mind (desire to see Umbrella brought down), compassionate, and loyal (e.g. sacrifices herself against Wesker to save Chris without a second thought). I can't imagine the Jill of the games being so reckless. Film 2 introduced some named characters, but of them, only Carlos had a personality even remotely resembling that of his game counterpart. But that said, on its own merits, film 2 does have some good stuff in it. It's not until film 3 that the series went off the rails of its own universe IMO.

3, the Alice clones. Now, the novelization may have explained this (yeah, I read deCandido's novels. He did a good job on trying to give characters more depth and rationalizing the increasing insanity of the films), but Alice's blood? Fine. I'm down for it. How does sending clones into death traps prove anything about their blood? It's "kewl," but not "cool," if you catch my drift.

4, haven't seen, but I'm aware of the storyline through reviews and whatnot. But 5? The idea of Umbrella creating clones for simulations is a nice idea. What's more iffy is that in these simulations, the zombies are running around like maniacs, whereas in films 1-3, bar the super zombies in the third film, they shambled? So first, why are these zombies so fast? Second of all, why do they have the plagas parasite? From what I understand, the fourth film establishes that the plagas is a mutation from the T-virus, not a separate pathogen like in the games. So if these are "fresh" zombies, what's up with these? And come to think of it, why is the Red Queen bothering with simulations at all now? And why's the Red Queen even returned, and why is she now homicidal, and what happened to the White Queen, and GAH?!

Also, the Moscow scene. Zombies with guns. That's right, we've reached the point of zombies with guns. Nevermind that it's poorly shot (e.g. it just shows the rescue team firing wildly, with no rhyme or rythem to the scene), but we are now inside a Call of Duty parody. Yes, I know zombies had guns as early as RE4 (5, if you're stretching it), but those were at least minorities, and they at least had the plagas, which granted far more leeway for retaining intelligence).

I disagree with 4. I hated that scene. It took about 10 minutes to get through because every fucking shot HAD to be slow-mo. If it was sped up to normal speed, it would have been about 2 minutes of footage.

they are as action driven as RE5 and 6 combined. sure, it has its moments that stick out and were sort of relate-able to the games and seeing characters from the games as well. yet, it deviated so far off the source material that could have easily been titled differently.
part 4 was rather a slowmotion fest just to show of its 3d. yeah, some of them looked alright but the movie it self would be a little bit better if it hadnt the slowmotion.

If you're going to talk about the movies in the Resident Evil franchise, why not mention the actual movies Degeneration and Damnation? Hell, they just announced Resident Evil: Vendetta. I don't recall anyone including the Super Mario Bros. movie when paying tribute to the games, because that thing is just as awful and just as faithful as Anderson's diaretic squirts as these movies are to RE. Listing the best five moments of these films is like trying to sort through the top five hits you took when you got jumped in an alley.

the difference is, that these 2 movies are animations.
but yeah, they should be mentioned as well since, i think, are closer to the games than the anderson movies. at least you have some sort of horror going on there and the characters behave like the damn characters in the game.
ada wong is a good example. in the live action movie she is rather emotional and supportive instead being the cold blooded, lone wolf, yet being amused character in the game. at least in the animation she is still flirty with leon that still gives the impression that there is something going on between these 2, only in a playful way.
thats something that is missing in the anderson movies.
and fully agree about the mario movie. that is truly a stinker. and im not even a mario fan.

didnt know about the vendetta movie. thanks for mentioning it.

I think the best moment from the first movie (I actually typed game instead of movie) was the Umbrella mercs getting sliced up in the laser hallway.

What... no Alice, on the motorbike, in the church? That has always been my favourite moment in a RE film.

I love the films. Don't get me wrong, I know they are cheesy, I know they have bad acting. I know the lore doesn't match to the games, or even its self at times. I know sometimes it is damn random and mega confusing, but who cares? It's a set of themed mindless action flicks, and that is what I love them for!

I agree with you too, Marter, I loved the scene vs The Executioner. I found it exciting, and so much fun and it helped make Afterlife one of the stand out films. That, the roof landing scene and the fact that it introduced me to Kacey Clarke, one bloody stunning actress.

I guess these movies appeal to a certain audience. I also like watching B movie thrillers that don't take themselves to seriously. I love the Tremors series, the Mega Shark series, Sharknado et al. They all get awful critic scores, but that's not who they were made for. Compared to some of those films the RE francise is a dream!

As someone who has not played the games or watched the movie, reading those descriptions... wow.

So, one scene from each film? Personally, I thought the last two were pretty dire, though I liked the first 3.

Oh...um, there are plenty of protests in the US about this sort of thing all the time, so apparently not so much,

Don't want to turn this into a debate about police brutality (especially as I don't live in the US), but there's a difference between shooting suspects out in the city itself with debatable cause, and someone walking into a police station and opening fire without apparent provocation.

can say the same of a friend of mine who is a movie goer but not a gamer. he enjoys even this abomination movie named DOOM. thinking its pretty awesome. when i told him how it is from a gamers point of view, he sure looked surprised how the entire plot is different. he said he can understand why we would be upset about it but since he is not a gamer, he enjoys it as it is.
but he does admit that the resi movies arent that great but enjoyable enough. when i have watched the fourth movie in the cinema, since i was curious how the 3d would look like, he asked me how it is from a movie viewers point of view, not the gamers view. told him that the movie as such is just watchable but far from good. but from a gamer view it sucks.

I played the first 2 DOOM games, enjoyed them at the time but they aren't my favorite FPS's by a long shot.

That being said, it wasn't even that the DOOM movie wasn't faithful to the game, it's that it was just terrible, period. It didn't help either that it felt like the filmmakers were trying to "pay homage to" ALIENS, which just had the effect of making me wish I were watching ALIENS instead.

Really, any movie that makes you wish you were watching a similar, much better movie clearly messed up somewhere along the line.

Back to RE, I saw the first 3 films and while I've never really played the games(aside from an hour or so of the second one at a friends house), I have a pretty good idea of the plot and characters. I liked the first one okay, while the next two just seemed worse and worse.

actually, the movie was based more of the third doom game. station on mars, scientists, failed experiment. only in the game they have opened a portal to hell wile in the movie you know already what its about.

I could talk about the climax of RE: Afterlife, but I'll show this instead, as its a near perfect reenactment of my reaction.

As someone who watched the Doom movie without having played the games (bar playing Doom for a bit on my friend's computer way back in the day), I can attest that the film is lacklustre as its own thing as much as it is as an adaptation. The only saving grace is that it's slightly better than the original Doom novel series (of which I've read the first two...ugh). The Doom 3 novels are okay though.

So, yeah, I think evaluating as a film as its own thing and as an adaptation are two separate judgements - Starship Troopers is a poor adaptation of the novel, but a good film in its own right for instance. The Resident Evil films however, well, they've just gone down both as their own films and as adaptations of the source material. The latter I an live with, the former...sigh...

my friend didnt even know that some of the movies are based of games like tomb raider, doom and these terrible uwe boll movies.
i had to give him a rundown on the resi games and characters so as with hitman, tomb raider, etc.

didnt know about the doom novels. never saw it or even heard of it. i know there are books of tomb raider and mass effect. only read one of them, and thats tomb raider.

Nah, best scene was when Milla comes off the surgical table near the end of the first movie ;)
