Activision Confirms New Ghostbusters Games for July Release

Little bit of stream-crossing, as Activision confirms a pair of Ghostbusters video games.

In a press release today, Activision confirmed the rumored Ghostbusters video game, which will be hitting PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in July. The game is set to take place after the events of the new movie, but will feature an entirely new cast of characters. According to the press release, the game will be a third-person action rpg that will support couch co-op for up to four players. As reported by USA Today [http://www.usatoday.com/videos/life/2016/04/14/83020388/?AID=10709313&PID=6149513&SID=in0fqgbse700ag8y00dth], the game will release on July 12 in the US, while the game will hit on July 15 in Europe.

"As rookie Ghostbusters, players can level up their characters' gear and abilities by tackling objectives, defeating ghastly creatures and discovering hidden collectibles in Manhattan's most haunted haunts," the release reads. "There are four heroes to choose from, and each has his or her own unique personality and play style, bringing special strengths to support the team."

Meanwhile, Activision also announced a second Ghostbusters game, also with a new cast, titled Ghostbusters: Slime City. This is a mobile title, which is also expected to release in July.

"Team up with other players in asynchronous co-op, and collect powerful ghosts to rise to the top of the leaderboards," it's described. "Players can also craft their own proton packs from any number of combinations of components, as well as upgrade their own headquarters and complete jobs around the city for new weapons and rewards."

(head in hands)

Why do they keep destroying a beloved franchise? First the trailer for the new film pretty much confirms (when coupled with the sony email leaks) that it's going to be horrendously unfunny.

Now we have yet more Ghostbuster games that miss the point completely.

(sighs)

I'll be over here, in the trauma recovery tent ready to catch the franchise and whisper supportive things into its ears.

Those both look and sound positively mediocre. "Action RPG", "crafting", "leaderboards", ugh.

In what? Shitty movie tie-in games? I suppose they deserve credit for it taking place -after- the movie and not being a retelling of it. Still doubt it will be any good though.

"Play as your favourite character from the beloved franchise!"
"Play as a character you don't really care about from the cash-in reboot!"
"Play as some random!"

I would prefer a game that was a sequel to the last Ghostbusters game. Maybe even use the script that the original cast would have starred in as the story. Oh and have the original cast.

Well at first I was happy to hear about a set of new games for Ghostbusters. I love the franchise and I thought the other game was wonderful. I want to look forward to it and yeah it doesn't look like it'll be a movie tie in but man I'm not sure about this.

I am very cynical and doubtful of a lot of things, and as fun as it is to be all "I told you so" I often hope to be wrong. Though I'm not a big ghostbusters fan, so I don't personally care, but doesn't mean I want actual fans to suffer a bad game.

What we really need is a Ghostbusters themed X-Com game like Yahtzee was talking about on his Let's Drown Out series.

The idea of a Ghostbusters aRPG made me happy. Watching the trailer made me want to die, come back as a ghost and haunt the shit out of Activision's HQs.
