Tetris Movie Starts Shooting Next Year

Tetris - the movie, has secured an $80m budget.

Hollywood will make a movie out of anything these days - including children's toys and games that don't really translate to movies like Tetris [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Steel] is the latest such "They made a movie out of that?" venture, and today the folks behind it announced they have secured an $80 million budget and will start filming next year.

According to Deadline [http://deadline.com/2016/05/tetris-the-movie-bruno-wu-larry-kasanoff-threshold-global-china-cannes-1201758000/], the movie will shoot in China, where it will be a co-production between China and the U.S. that will star both Chinese and Western actors. Bruno Wu, a Chinese billionaire and media giant, and American producer Larry Kasanoff (Mortal Kombat) will be the main folks behind this one.

If you think this is already pretty crazy, you should know that Wu and Kasanoff are planning for the movie to be the first in a trilogy. We have no real idea on what the plot will be, but back in 2014 Kasanoff said he wanted to turn Tetris into an "epic sci-fi thriller".

It looks like *snicker* all the pieces are falling into place for the Tetris movie.

Are we that bereft of new ideas that we have to make films out of practically mundane old thing that isn't suited to the medium? Watch for the "tape measure" movie to hit the screens 2022.

If this song isn't going to be in the movie, then I fear for this movie...
Other than that, honestly, I forgot that Real Steel was a "Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots" movie... Then again, I keep forgetting about Battleship with Magic Mike and Rihanna...

... Are you serious? Are they serious? They can't be! I can't even blame Hollywood, this is China's fault! Why would the Chinese want to see a freakin' TETRIS MOVIE?!!! It makes sense that Larry freakin' Kasanoff would help fund this thing, considering he's the idiot that helped make Foodfight!

This movie is going to be worse then Battleship.

...Shouldn't it be a tetralogy?

Wow. Eighty million dollars. I'm sure that will... come in handy... for... rendering bricks...?

And possibly the most famously Russian property since the nesting doll is, of course, a U.S.-China co-production.

On oh, so many levels, this can't possibly be good. If you gave me eighty million dollars and sent me to Las Vegas, at least one person would enjoy it, and there would probably be a better return on investment.

I remember this Nintendo Power comic where Raoul and Nester teach the readers how to play Tetris, where Raoul and Nester themselves turned into Tetroids, but they had each one's hair so the readers could tell them apart. Tetris is considered the best game of all time, has one of the best themes (the one that rips off a Russian nursery rhyme), so I think this movie can work. I kinda liked Battleship, but the game references that remained on that one scene felt a little out of place [irony].

I wonder if they will pull the Pixels plot of using spacial Voxels (you heard that right, they are not pixels, they are voxels) as the matter that gets in contact with normal matter creating more voxels, except the premise of Tetris is getting rid of them and not creating more.

That's funny. I thought Tetris already HAD a movie...

Question is...will Russia actually be involved?

Wasn't Tetris supposed to be some kind of Soviet mind control thing? People do get obsessed with it and high scores. If they are willing to play with some metanarrative, Tetris could be used to symbolize certain problematic aspects of society.

Somehow I don't think that's going to happen, though.

It's not about lacking in ideas, after all it would take some incredible creativity to turn Tetris into a movie. It's about brand recognition. They're making a Tetris movie because Tetris is a well known and familiar brand name that's pretty safe to bank on.

It has nothing to do with being bereft of ideas and more to do with the undiscerning way the public consumes media. The question isn't "are we that bereft of new ideas?" but rather "is the public willing to reward this sort of laziness?"

And while there have been failures (Battlehip immediately comes to mind), the message we have sent overall is...

Yes.

If we were to demand smarter and more creative movies and not watch any big budget spectacle that comes along, we'd see this shit dry up fast.

As it is, if they toss in enough explosions, they can probably create the Tetris Cinematic Universe. I personally can't wait for square's movie.

Y'know, say what you will about the Angry Birds and Emoji movies, at least they expanded the source's rather basic plot and imitated a somewhat similar film (i.e., Wreck-it Ralph) respectively. Hell, on top of that, say what you will about Pixels, but it had a semi-reasonable conceit that would justify the existence of the tetrominos (creations of an alien invasion based off video game elements). How the hell are they going to make a plot about Tetris? (and expand said plot into a trilogy on top of that).

EDIT: Correction, how would they make a plot about Tetris that's not a straighter version of this?

At least this has the conceit of being a parody of edgy, Hollywood adaptations that're the source in name only.

Larry Kasanoff... look, maybe Mortal Kombat is a more relevant movie regarding credentials for a video game movie, but it's also worth noting that this is the man who brought us FOODFIGHT. Sweet merciful crap, I can't even handle this.

Don't you mean this?

Only if you want Hollywood to ruin it by turning it into a Michael Bay film. (Save that for Tetris 2 and Tetris Blast.)

I dunno, the article says it'll apparently be an "epic, sci-fi thriller."
