I'll say this much, I'm not a fan of these kinds of games (I'm a plodder and a plotter, and I'm most at home with slow stealth games like the original two Thief games), but I've seen plenty of gameplay videos and this definitely strikes me as a game that accomplished what it wanted to with style and flair. If I was into these kind of games this would probably be exactly what I want.

All the multiplayer needs to be awesome is to up the movement speed to 1.5x, remove the glory kills entirely (they mess with the hit reg) and go back to the old school method of weapons spawning in the map and everyone getting a pistol.

Then it would be awesome, even the Demons could stay if they got a bit of a health nerf to make them more glass cannon than steel wall. It's a shame because the MP is going to die off quickly.

Nevermind, the campaign is brilliant, so much better than the MP Beta and pre-release footage had me thinking it would be. Between this, Wolfenstein and a Quake that must surely be in the works by now, Bethesda could carve itself out a very handy niche as the company that still makes real twitch shooters.

I may be weird, but I want a Hexen.

Wouldn't call that weird. I figure that if there's a market for this kind of revival, there's a market for the rumored Marathon remake as well.

I hate to be "that guy," but how would a Quake 5 (and it might as well be called Quake 5) play out? Admittedly, never played Quake, but from what I understand, we start off with C'thulu stuff (Quake 1) followed by borg-knockoffs (Quake 2), an arena shooter (Quake 3), return to the borg with a mix of Aliens marines (Quake 4), then a game in the Battlefield style (Quake Wars, again with borg-knockoffs). I can't help but observe that "Quake" seems less like a series and more a group of vaguely connected games that bear the title without any unifying theme connecting them. Which, given that Quake 2 was only named as such because iD couldn't or wouldn't use another title due to copyright issues, and that Quake 1 was originally going to be pure fantasy, makes sense.

So, I'm honestly not being snide, but, yeah. Doom has the theme of demons, Wolfenstein has the theme of Nazis, Quake has...what, exactly, in terms of its core ethos?

Even before the game came out I had a feeling the campaign was going to be something special. From all of the gameplay they'd showed in the months leading up to the release, and the interviews about development and the changes in direction from when the project had first started, my gut was telling me that this game was going to be good.

Sho'nuff, it is. It's not just good, it's bloody fantastic. It marries some of the best elements of old-school and new-school shooters into a beautiful mix of gory delight. In fact, it's provided some of the most cathartic moments I've experienced in a game in years.

Good show, id. You've reaffirmed your place in the annals of the greats.

-edit-
Let's not forget Mick Gordon's brilliant work on the soundtrack and score either.

Quake started out with a vaguely similar storyline to Doom in that a research installation (of which had invented a sort of teleportation technology called Slipgates) was being invaded by a hostile force, codenamed Quake. It was believed that Quake was some interdimensional being.

Quake II started life as an entirely separate series but was reworked to carry the Quake moniker at some point in development. Since then the Quake mythos has primarily revolved around Earth's struggles against an alien force known as the Strogg.

Truth be told the series has a bit of an identity crisis but there is some modicum of lore to it, primarily in the form of Quake II, Quake 4, and Enemy Territory.

At some point in 2011 John Carmack had apparently been tossing around the idea of making a new entry in the series, but rather than continue with the Strogg storyline he postured 'returning to the series roots' and 'going back to the bizarre, mixed up Cthulhu-ish Quake world and rebooting that direction.' Clearly, nothing's come of it. (yet)

finished the game yesterday and i sure had blast with it. yeah, the glory kills got stale pretty quickly but at least you get rewarded with health and ammo.

the MP is the only thing that suck hard. its a bit faster now compared to the beta but having no weapons to pick up is still a fail in my book. playing as a demon was amusing since you can rip enemies apart but of course being the victim is not much fun since these demons can kill you with one hit.

That would be GREAT!

Hexen is one of my ALL time favorite games, the labyrinthine maps and obscure, riddle-like buttons was an absolute blast. Plus there were enough enemies for it to be great fun in coop as well. A Hexen would be ACE.

That said, DOOM is the best shooter I've played in ages. The story might not be the highlight of the year, but its not supposed to be. The game is simply raw, adrenaline-filled fun. I actually cant remember the last time I had so much fun in a single player shooter.

Its one of the few games I absolutely want when I get a PS4. Watching videos of it is like watching porn. My only real annoyance is that it could have used a few more enemy types and had more enemies just there waiting for you instead of beaming in. It made sense on Mars I guess but when you are in hell I think they should just already be there.

If we get a Hexen, can we also get a Heretic while we're at it?
Why not? And while we're at it, let's say we get new, quality entries in the following series:
Timesplitters
Half-Life
Turok
Quake
SiN
Shogo
Kingpin
Blood
Rainbow Six
(Siege doesn't count)
Team Fortress
Perfect Dark
No One Lives Forever
Left 4 Dead
The Chronicles of Riddick

I would have added System Shock but apparently Warren Specter has begun work on making a third game, so...

Anyone else in for a new "Blood" that ignores the second and third part of the series and goes back, to the gory glory of the first game ?

It's okay not great. Fast paced for sure, and the Super Shotgun is really satisfying to use.
But the glory kills, closed of arena sections, very limited ammo early on and confusing level design are design choices that frustrate me alot.

Didn't pay full price for it atleast, and I'm still willing to finish it atleast once. It's not terrible, just ranging from "meh" to it's okay.

It's more like Quake fused with Brutal Doom with a nod or 2 to Metroid Prime.

I love how clearly the difference between the single player and multiplayer shows why subsidizing game elements to lesser developers is a bad idea. The singleplayer of this game is bloody awesome and brutal in the best way. The multiplayer? Slow, clunky shooter populated by bullet sponge players. So boring.

God, a Heretic 3 and Hexen 3 in the general mold of New Doom would make me the happiest gamer on the planet. The old id/Raven shooters are what made me a gamer in the first place. If I knew the first thing about computers and could make those games work on my laptop, I would still play them.

Well Quake Wars, Quake 2, 4 and 3 all share a continuity (in that order for their timeline), although 3 is somewhat of a tangent.

I would like a proper sequel to Quake Wars. It's objective maps were a step above Battlefield's Rush mode. Instead of bland M-Coms, a level would run along the lines of capture forward base to acquire siege tank, use siege tank(s) to break main base outer walls, enter enemy factory/space ship/whatever and plant demolition charges, defend charges until they explode to win. Also the Humans/Strogg were extremely different in their abilities.

Quake has always had a bigger scale and more outlandish weapons than Doom, it could be great for multiplayer. Plus a return of the hover tank that could do 70mph in all directions is long overdue.

Alternatively, Quake 5 could pick up after the end of Quake 4 with a single player campaign about your group of marines continued fight against the Strogg. Quake 4 had some extremely cool moments in it, not least whenever your home base/battlecruiser made an appearance on the battlefield.

'Your ideas are worth considering, mortal.'

Would like to see new classes added in a new Hexen, adding replay value to both the single player and my favourite feature of the original- the multiplayer co-op. Graphics technology has gotten markedly better at doing Gothic architecture, just as it has with Doom's demons.

I always thought the Strogg in Quake were all cyborgs and robots, except not limiting themselves to humanoids and possessing more personality than the Borg collective.

Whatever the case and the resulting influence on bringing back other FPS classics, I'm immensely glad to see this turned out well. Doom was my first ever M-rated game, and I'll never forget it even if I don't recall being particularly scared by it.

Man, this thread is turning into "all the games I loved and would want to play again." I absolutely adored Quake Wars, and I would love to play a modern updated version that had exactly the same gameplay.

I've been wanting a Hexen III for ages. Hexen II is one of my favorite games. I could deal with a new heretic too, but I prefer first person. I picked up Heretic, Hexen and Hexen II on Steam. It was getting to be a pain to manage on a new machine.
