The Last Guardian is Apparently Going to Release in 2016 After All

The Last Guardian has taken its place at the head of the "games that might never be released" list ever since Duke Nukem Forever came out. But it might shake off that title, as it will apparently finally see the light of day this year.

According to to the cover story in the latest issue of Edge Magazine [https://twitter.com/edgeonline/status/735727248276226048], the long-awaited game will release later this year. Game director Fumito Ueda is quoted as saying, "Since this is the year we will see the game's release, I do have some worries, but I'm also very excited."

The Last Guardian is the tale of a young boy and the strange animal that he befriends. Part cat, part bird, and part something else, the beast is know as Trico. It can shoot red lightning from its tail at a target you designate, but you never have complete control of the creature. In fact, Ueda said that he didn't want to make a game like that, and that Trico is a "free-spirited creature that flagrantly disregards your attempts to tame it."

There's still no official release date given yet, but you can bet that we'll hear all about at E3 next month.

I feel like it has. At this point, Valve can't possibly win by releasing it, so I've given up hope.

It feels like i kind of swapped to the right system at the right time here. I have no emotional baggage with this particular title...it just feels like walking in the rear entrance to the holy grail crypt, wide eyed and bushy tailed to take an innocent sip. Only then to notice all the corpses on the floor ahead. Or...something?

I wonder how good it could possibly be given all of the delays. I still remember how they were originally going to have a female protagonist, but with all the climbing they thought it was bad for the camera to always look up her skirt: so, they changed it to a guy instead of giving her pants. @_@

I was excited for this game at one point, but it's been so long I don't really care anymore. Same issue I'm having with Kingdom Hearts, as well: waiting two console generations for the next game is never a good thing.

HL3 still has time, but at this point I'm not sure it'd be worth it.

There's too much money to be made by releasing *anything* at this point and calling it The Last Guardian. It'll happen, we just might not like how it happens. I'm still hanging onto some hope...

Yeah, no. We don't even have an official release date yet, and once we do, I'm pretty sure it's going to be pushed into 2017. Honestly, I don't know why I care this much. I ascended years ago, and will likely never play the game.

Ah, the game I almost bought a PS3 for only for it to not come out any of the four times it was announced.

I'm still sort of curious about it buuuut yeah, it's been so long now, some of the hype has died down. Then again, Bioshock Infinite was delayed several times (though we're talking months, not years and entire console gens) and it was universally praised so maybe I should give it a little more potential.

But yeah no, I stopped holding my breath years ago. It's a fable at this point so it's a nice thought but hard to take seriously

No matter when or if it is released it will fail every player's expectations. Honestly this thing should have died years ago. I feel sad for all those fans who have waited and prayed for this game to be released. So happy I'm not a fan. Ico looked retarded as hell, Shadows of the Colossus on the other hand was great(even though the last few colossus phoned it in).

I will believe it when I hold a copy of the game in my hands. Then I will immediately put it in my PS4 and love it to death no doubt.
But until that happens, this game is firmly set in the back of my mind, only to be brought out and dusted off on occasion, but never longed for.

As much as I'm happy about the news, part of my brain will not accept this game as a reality until it is in my hands, shoved into my PS4, and my eyes are graced with it's presence.

Yeah, I've recently come to terms with that myself. It's pretty sad but with so much build up and expectation, it's just not gonna be up to standards if it ever gets made.

Well Half Life 3 has never been announced. While Duke Nukem Forever and Last guardian were both announced then undergone a decade of development hell each.
