Why is Unreal Tournament 1999 not on this list?

It's what I always go to when I'm in a bad mood, and it's super great for it. It's fast-paced, all the guns have a satisfying kick to them (fuck yeah flak cannon and fuck yeah double pistols!), and you respawn instantly after dying, letting you jump right back into it.

...At least it WAS my go-to game. Then my new laptop just stopped being good at running it, doubly so after windows 10 forced itself onto my machine without my consent. :(

I need to figure out how to get it running properly again. I miss it and UT 2004 just isn't as good. The weapons all lack the proper "kick". It's like going from Paintball to Laser tag!

As much as I like Borderlands, to me it's not really a game to play when I'm angry.

When a friend of mine used to have a 360, playing Gears of War was a really good game to play if one of us was having a bad day. The chainsaw was a weapon of choice because it was Just. So. Good.

The only ones on here I disagree with are Borderlands and Dead Island. Since they're action RPGs about lootin and craftin and doin missions, it doesn't give the same catharsis as other FPS titles that are full action all the time. Other than that, superb choice of fast-paced FPSs, with a nice shout out to Hard Reset which does not get enough love.

Fun fact: You can find all of those games listed under my cousin's Steam library... if you're on his computer, of course...

Other than that, I'll stick with Metroid Prime during one particular section in that game, thank you very much... *shakes fist*

Funny thing, I've beaten Bulletstorm recently, then moved on to Shadow Warrior, after which I've beaten Hard Reset (Redux) and now I'm playing Serious Sam 3 in coop with my buddy. Not kidding here.

My brand of rage management involved Painkiller or Left 4 Dead 2 with a playlist of 80's metal and industrial.

With Left 4 Dead 2 I always put on it Easy, picked the theme park level and parked myself in front of the safehouse with the infinite zombie carrousel still turned out. Ammo nearby, just hold that AK-47 trigger or go wild with a pump-action shotgun (because that thing is so satisfying) and grab a guitar for extra that !!METAL!! level.

And then just watch the chunks fly until you're calm again. Goooood stuff.

If you ask me; because when I was mad I suuuucked at it making me even more mad. That's one high-focus game.

I'm a huge Metroid Prime fan yet I have no idea which part you're talking about.

Dead Island is kinda terrible and Borderlands is less running and gunning and more grinding for numbers...

The grievous sin of those inclusions is that there are two objectively much better FPS games to play when you're mad... Rise of the Triad and Painkiller.

Edit: Speaking of which imo not including Painkiller makes this list invalid. There is a gun that fires fence posts at enemies and pins them to walls, but... It also has a gun that fires shurikens and lightning, to quote Yahtzee, the only way it could be more awesome is if it had tits and was onfire.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
While I really liked Bulletstorm, it probably shouldnt be on this list since on pc its got gfwl, which will just piss you off more.

The reason I went with Borderlands is how entertaining it can be. Similar to watching a comedy (movie or tv show) to help you unwind or simply relax a bit.

What makes Wolfenstein so great is that when you blow your stealth, you don't get angry and hide; or get angry and reload the area; you get angry and reload your shotguns so you can go charging straight through the bloody haze of Nazi guts splattering everywhere. Then you're not angry any more.

The moment after you pick up the X-ray Visor... (There's an irony around here somewhere...)

Hard Reset yup because the game is so boring that you'll forget what you were angry about. (Personal opinion, got the redux version after playing Doom and hearing how it was a run and gun game in the same vain, Doom grabbed me from the word go, shook, threw and beat me through the entire length of the game and left me wanting more at the end. Hard Reset just didn't grab me at all.)

Dead island over Dying Light??? Hmmm not so sure about that one, Dying Light does everything Dead Island does and it does it much much better.

Doom, yeah I'd go with Doom something very engaging about playing a protagonist who is just as angry as you are.

GFWL literally doesn't exist anymore, thank fuck, so no need to worry there.

OT: I imagine it's not on the list due to being a mod, but I find Brutal Doom tremendously cathartic, moreso than Doom 2016.

Hey, wait! where's...?

Oh, right... Ratchet and Clank, Saints Row (3 & 4), and Dead Rising are third person shooters.

Oh well, there's still Painkiller and Ziggurat.

On a semi-related note:
Other games in other genres to play while angry:
Assault Android Cactus
Dynasty Warriors (or any iteration of Koei/Tecmo's Warriors series)
Warhammer 40k: Space Marine
One Finger Death Punch
Torchlight 1/2 (especially as an Engineer)
Broforce
Dust: An Elysian Tale
Transformers: Devastation

Mmm, I dunno. A few of these would be more likely to piss me off even more, rather than calming me down.

Bulletstorm was fairly buggy on PC. Borderlands is a grind fest at any point beyond the opening segments. Dead Island is rubbish, through and through. And, Shadow Warrior has such abysmally bad writing and overt stereo-typing I'd hate myself for turning to it to relax.

The rest, though. Agree entirely. DOOM, especially. The newest entry in the series is some of the most cathartic gaming I've experience in a long time.

If I may, besides those listed, some of my go-to 'relax and vent frustration' first-person shooters are:
* Left 4 Dead 2
* Quake 1 - 4
* Battleborn
* Half-Life
* Sven Co-op
* Team Fortress 2

Each I've become instinctively good at, so I don't have to concentrate that hard to do well (enough). And each has some moment(s) of catharsis that help me relax.

I find your lack of Duke Nukem 3D to be...Disturbing. You can run it on a calculator so literally everybody on the planet can access it, the gameplay is quick and snappy, the weapons are fun and satisfying to use, there's a good amount of depth to each level...It's a damn fine pick-up-and-play game and I'm surprised it's not on here. Call me bias if you will but Borderlands? Yes, what I want to see in my FPS as I'm shooting something in the face isn't blood and viscera, it's numbers and the thought of trading out equipment every 10 minutes isn't tedious at all.

Someone above mentioned Left 4 Dead and its sequel and I want that person to be given a cake immediately (or some other pastry of their choice).
