Disney Announces The Rocketeer Sequel-Reboot

Disney is bringing back The Rocketeer in what is described as part reboot, part sequel.

Disney's 1991 cult classic The Rocketeer is getting a sequel, The Hollywood Reporter [http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/rocketeer-disney-movie-reboot-works-915037] reports. The new film, called The Rocketeers, will be set six years after the original with a new protagonist, after Cliff Secord vanishes while fighting the Nazis. A new hero "takes up the mantle of Rocketeer in an attempt to stop an ambitious and corrupt rocket scientist from stealing jetpack technology in what could prove to be a turning point in the Cold War."

The script is being penned by Max Winkler and Matt Spicer, while Brigham Taylor (The Jungle Book) will be producing the film alongside Blake Griffin of the L.A. Clippers and Ryan Kalil of the Carolina Panthers.

According to THR, Disney began considering a reboot after the film's 20th anniversary screening in 2011. No cast has been announced yet, but THR reports that the story "will be headlined by a black female character."

This movie was pretty cool when I was a kid. Reboot it, it never really spawned a bunch of huge fans I don't think.

I don't have any stake in this. My memory of The Rocketeer was that it was an enjoyable, but forgettable, film; its hero had all the depth and flavor of cardboard. Maybe they can build something better out of that foundation. With a good script and a capable actress, it's certainly possible.

Hopefully they won't have a parallel experience to that of Indiana Jones in moving the villain d'jour from Nazis to Communists.

I did have to laugh at a website reporting on the story referring to this as "colorblind" casting, though. That you approve of the choice doesn't mean you get to strip a term of its meaning; this is anything but colorblind.

I groaned when I read they were making a reboot/sequel to the film. That last sentence simply makes me roll my eyes. Of course, I'm sure the usual suspects will claim that we all hate the idea of the film only because of the last sentence and not because it is yet another reboot/remake of a classic film.

Though, I am surprised that this one was a 90's film (released in '91) instead of an 80's film. I guess studious ran out of 80's films to pointlessly remake.

Seriously, stop remaking films! They were great at the time, but revisiting them adds nothing that we don't already have in the original.

But since we're remaking 90's films, now, what will be next? Forrest Gump? Pulp Fiction? Schindler's List?

6 years after the original, the original being set during the height of World War 2. So... 1950ish then? Well, it won't be all bad. That was a pretty decent time for black people, and women. Oh wait.

Anyone else find it a bit odd that the film doesn't have a script yet and Disney is already targeting demographics? Why not make something ya know, original for originality's sake? The House of Mouse, long may he reign, is certainly capable of this.

I liked the original, its one of those old movies that I saw as a kid and still kinda have a soft spot for. Lately Disney has been doing quite well with movies so I'm curious to see where this goes.

So we barely have a treatment for a sequel to a movie no one was really asking for, but we're putting a spotlight on our casting choice well before it's made.

Why am I afraid this movie will have the same lack of subtlety that plagued Agent Carter? Shame. Someone with tact might make it work.

Dammit! I didn't want to be spoiled about what the main lead of this movie would generally look like! You already had me at "new The Rocketeer movie"!! The rest could have been revealed during the first official trailer... or "teaser trailer", if you will...

On the other hand: Jesus guys, did you have to go out of your way to decide on that idea just to look progressive?
I'm GLAD for it, don't get me wrong. After the gigantic clusterfuck that was the Ghostbusters reactions... did Hollywood do it again to look like "that progressive company that cares" or did they actually decide on this cause that was what they truly wanted to do creatively? I only ask cause this seems to be the most "in" thing right now

If they keep it as a sequel the new lead won't really bother me at all. Heck, it could potentially be pretty darned interesting having a black woman in 1950's America as a fully covered hero like that. Beloved in the costume, ignored or despised when out. Could make for a good bit of character drive if nothing else.

When is Hollywood gonna learn that WW2 is simply way better to make movies of than the Cold War? Why would you ever choose the Cold War unless it was a die-hard Spy movie?

I'll follow this but the setting change just reeks of missed opportunities. I'd sooner have a Crimson Skies movie, thanks very much..
