Bourne Tops Box Office, Star Trek Drops Big

The Bourne franchise topped the box office this weekend. Star Trek Beyond dropped large.

Star Trek Beyond [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/matt+damon][/I], which was in its second week of release.

Beyond's significant drop - over 58% to $24.8 million - is the bigger story coming out of the weekend. The third in the rebooted Star Trek [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/star+trek] franchise, Beyond is currently looking to be a commercial failure, which may kill the potential for any future Trek movies.

In other box office news, Nerve [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/moviesandtv/reviews/cinemarter/17171-Bad-Moms-2016-Movie-Review] opened at number 8 with $9.5 million, although it made a significant chunk of change before the weekend with its Wednesday opening, closing the weekend with a total of $15.5 million.

Here is the top ten for the weekend:

1. Jason Bourne [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/moviesandtv/reviews/cinemarter/17168-Jason-Bourne-2016-Movie-Review] ($59.2 million, week 1)

[Just imagine me making a contemptuous eugenics-related comment about the 5th-place entry here.]

When was the last time a big budget action movie with Chris Hemsworth didn't flop, and he didn't play Thor?
Rush, although not an action movie (it had some action-y scenes, though), was a financial success.

Apart from that? Snow White and the Huntsman is really the only one, and since its sequel flopped, it's hard to attribute its success to Hemsworth.

I guess we are all waiting to see how Suicide Squad will do next week, it better do well cause the amount of advertising it is getting is like nothing I have ever seen, Civil War Batman Vs Superman, in fact nothing this year has had the same wall to wall advertising that Suicide Squad seems to be getting, it's almost like someone somewhere is a bit desperate to recoup the costs of another big budget flop that they released earlier in the year?

On a side note I hope Star Trek Beyond does flop, as much as I want their to be more Trek I don't want it to be THIS Trek. Let's call this reboot an experiment, one that worked for a while but in the end failed and given that the previous gen of Trek movies ran for 10 movies it's safe to say the reboot failed.

Its a shame, Beyond is probably the best Trek movie since STIV, and quite possibly the most "TOS" Trek of them all.

But... it didn't. Beyond is definitely in the upper 50%, if not 75% of all Trek movies made, and the person who made the trailer should be fired.

Agreed.

I thought Bourne was awful, so here's hoping that Beyond has legs and Bourne drops like a rock.

Well, a shame about Beyond, but it's still one of the weaker Star Trek movies I've seen, hovering about the #7 mark. At the least, Bourne is the #2 Bourne film I've seen, and even if you disagree, I think most would agree it's a step up from Legacy.

At the end of the day, I don't mind too much. The Kelvinverse movies, Q bless them, have at least had the decency to not tease us with sequel bait and gain sequels based on their own merits, so at the least, Beyond doesn't really scream out for a sequel. Jason Bourne does leave stuff open for a sequel, but doesn't scream out for it either.

Sad that I have to be greatful that a lack of sequel bait has become a plus, but hey, go figure. :(

TOS was not an action movie. Not even close.

I know. Half of the time it was an intelligent discourse on societal issues of the time it was made in, including parallels to the Cold War.

The other half it was an acid trip. ;p

I think part of it, myself included despite hearing the exact same thing you are saying from a wide enough variety of people and critics alike to justify it before even seeing it, I just couldn't be bothered. The last two just annoyed me because of how much they dumbed it down. People just sort of lost trust for the series at this point.

I didn't think Borne was a bad movie. I had fun with it even though it didn't do anything new or unique. The plot was pretty inconsequential and consisted of "the government is gonna spy on people". It has Splinter Cell Conviction syndrome though. Jason Bourne for the most part wanted to be left alone. He wanted some answers about his father. Instead of trying to kill him, if they just said "here's what happened with your father", made up some bullshit about why he was under surveillance and left the rest alone all would have been fine. Granted then they wouldn't have been able to make a movie.

The plots have overall been pretty rudimentary since the end of the second movie though.

Same problem here....I had no intention of seeing Beyond due to my irritation with the last two Star Trek films. Now I hear it may actually be good....but I passed the point where I need to rush out and see it; easy enough to wait for a blu-ray release of catch it at the second-run discount theater next month.

Well it depends on what you found irritating about the previous two films.
The film is tremendously stupid, but I think the creators know it. The climax literally involves combining technobabble with hip-hop to save the day. The villain also somehow manged to out lame both of the new-trek films' villains.

However the movie's strength comes from breaking the crew up into pairs and allowing for some actually clever and entertaining dialogue as the characters play off each other.

So while I enjoyed it and couldn't stop laughing at the action climax, I can see good reason for you to skip it.

How is second place a flop? Especially when it has to compete in the US with a "merica, fuck yeah" action blockbuster franchise? (Or more "merican, fuckin' up 'xotic places...yeah!" To be more precise.) It would be like having to compete with the latest Bond incarnation in the UK with a middling, divisive sci-fi franchise that already split it's original fanbase.

China's going through a spectacle phase right now similar to the 50s US only with oh god so much branding. With the local industry maturing (and starting to export) combined with a lower % take from sales, the China crutch is going to rapidly disappear.

What I hope will happen actually could happen. That people will have had enough of concepts and corporate check-writing exercises while favoring movies where the creators were just screaming to have it made. Dory, for example, was stewing for a long while before Pixar had a story it get excited for compared to Ice Age which phones it in more than AT&T. In this glorious Valhalla IP works still exist but are judged on their merits and if they attempt something new (where Apocalypse is meh'd to death while Deadpool earns all the money). But then again I've been predicting the same thing for the games industry but people are still buying CoD every year.

If you like the characters, see it when it comes out on TV.

Most of the plot points are the same from the last two: Kirk learns to fill the role of Captain; insane villain revenge plot.

It's pretty average. I had also heard it was "much better than the first two", but really, it's just better than Into Darkness (which isn't saying much).

Jason Bourne was a disgrace. The only other movie that have made me want to leave the cinema was Transformers 3.

I love the first 3, heck even the 4th of the Bourne movies, but this latest one was bad in absolutely every sense.
