The Payment Model for Quake Champions is Still Up in the Air

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/1341/1341256.jpgid Software still doesn't know if their upcoming shooter will be free-to-play, or not.

Ever since id Software announced a new game in the Quake franchise at E3, people have been wondering what form it will take. Will it be a full-priced game, like Overwatch, or will it embrace to the free-to-play model, more like Team Fortress 2? If you're one of those wondering, don't feel bad. Even the folks at id don't know the answer yet.

Tim Willits of id spoke on the issue at QuakeCon over the weekend. In an interview with PC Gamer [http://www.pcgamer.com/id-software-doesnt-know-yet-if-quake-champions-will-be-free-to-play/], he said that the studio is still trying to decide how it will monetize the game. He said, "I can definitely say that is a really hard problem, and so for us we're trying to figure out exactly what people want more of, and how they perceive it."

While that might sound like he's dodging the question, Willits says that's not the case. "And I'm not even trying to be cagey! It's not like we know and just aren't trying to tell anybody, we don't know and we're still trying to figure this out," he explained.

Quake Champions isn't even set to start it beta testing until 2017, so the studio has plenty of time to come up with an answer.

Don't be F2P, and have 0 tolerance for cheaters.

Learn from Team Fortress 2, a game that is hopelessly infested with hackers.

Honestly the new gameplay looked great and I'm really interested in this game now. I didn't play the old Quakes so I have no reference point. Dunno how classic fans feel about it.

But I agree with the others above. I'd rather pay a price up front and be done with it. That initial barriar to entry results in a better community imo. Cosmetics never meant much to me so I mostly ignore those in-game transactions if they want to include them.

They should go the Overwatch route but not be so stingy with the in game currency when you get duplicate items.
