Firaxis Will Stream an Eight-Way Civilization VI AI Battle on October 19

If you love playing Civilization, or just wish it was a spectator sport, Firaxis has something planned that may interest you. Next week, the developer will team up with publisher 2K to stream what they are calling the "AI Battle Royale." This was announced in the Tweet embedded below.

Starting at 3:30 PM ET on October 19, you'll be able to watch the stream on 2K's Twitch channel [http://twitch.tv/2k]. It will feature 8 AI civs battling for supremacy as devs from Firaxis look on and provide commentary. The eight civs that will be participating are the Aztecs, Brazil, England, Greece, Japan, Rome, Russia, and Spain.

What we've seen of Civ VI so far has been promising, as you can see in this preview [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/previews/17257-Sid-Meier-Civilization-VI-Civ-6-Preview] by our Editor-in-Chief, Josh Vanderwall. It should be fun to watch the various civs beat each other to a bloody pulp, although it just won't be the same without Ghandi in there to chuck some nukes around.

This is interesting- it shows that Firaxis certainly has faith in the game, and in the AI. I wonder how much we'll actually be able to see in terms of city management, though; an AI would know what everything is and does and just select what it wanted.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Maybe by 'duking it out' they mean that two civs will be actively at war or going for a conquest victory while the other civs show off the other victory options?

I dunno, i don't really trust either firaxis or 2k at this point. I imagine they will tweak the Ai to oblivion to make it intelligent only to dumb it down on release.

A more cynical way of seeing it: they knew that the AI was so dumb that the only way to make it a real challenge would be to have it be challenged by other AIs.

Cmon, you know you can't trust those AI proofreaders. They came from the future to take our menial internet jobs!

A more cynical way of seeing it: they knew that the AI was so dumb that the only way to make it a real challenge would be to have it be challenged by other AIs.

And that'd be shortsighted and probably incorrect; par for the course for cynicism. Firaxis isn't stupid; they know that even the people who liked Civ 5 and Beyond Earth found the AI lacking. The logical thing to do, if they hadn't improved it, would be to have a bunch of staffers, who know the game and know how to make it look its best, play it against each other. If it's still the dumb-as-toast affair from the last two games, putting it out there with no human players to mitigate the damage it might do would be marketing suicide.
