New Killzone 2 Ad Is "Playable"

The newest tv ad for Killzone 2, built from the ground up in the game engine itself, is also coming in a "playable" version to PlayStation Network in March.

Remember three years ago when former PlayStation evil mastermind Ken Kutaragi said that the PlayStation 3 is "live" and that it existed in "TV spot [http://ps3.ign.com/articles/696/696060p1.html] would think so.

Unlike the infamous Killzone 2 target trailer [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko9xC6TMdiw] from E3 2005, the ad was built entirely from the ground up in the Killzone 2 engine. "The idea for the commercial centered on telling the story of war on Helghan - up close and very personal and to use the game's engine to show it. No voodoo, no heavy metal soundtrack: just the true representation of the in-game graphics," Scott Steinberg of Sony said.

The ad pulls a Stranglehold [http://www.strangleholdgame.com/] as the camera follows the trajectory of a bullet from a rifle into the head of an unsuspecting Helghast, after which the log and tag line - "WAR. PERFECTED." - show up in big old letters. It certainly looks like the real thing, and pulls out all the stops in the graphical wizardry department: tons of particle effects, a conveniently placed puddle of water to show off how awesome KZ2's water reflection tech is.

To prove that it's for really for real and not CG this time, Sony is making the ad playable, kinda. "To offer you some insight into the technology behind this game, we will release a playable version of this in-engine ad vignette on the PlayStation Network coming in March," Steinberg explained. "You'll be able to control the camera and hear director commentary on how the production was completed using only the game's technology."

And what's Sony's codename for this entire project? "Killzone In 4-D." Ken Kutaragi, wherever he is right now, has his arms crossed and is leaning back in his chair, smiling.

Killzone 2 has been so hyped up now im afraid im gonna be very dissapointed by it..
But hopefully it is not just "talk" from the developers, this game better set a new standard when it comes to shooters..
Somehow i dont think so, and after trying it i have a strange feeling of me beeing more pleased by both Resistance 2 and Bad Company..

Played the demo?

Anway, on topic, now thats a novel idea :), kudos to you Guerilla. If theres a camera control option in the vignette will that transfer to the normal game as well? Halo-theater-style?

Not to sound like a party-pooper, but how is this actually 4D?
Time? ie slow-mo capabilities i presume, prehaps rewind and such.

Well thats a strange concept, anyway the demo basically shows everything you need to know except about the much-praised multiplayer online - Its incredibly pretty and polished, and feels meaty and visceral - pretty much all its trying to be.

Not to sound nerdy, but is time even the fourth dimension? And if it is, then haven't games been 4D ever since Max Payne and Blinx?
Time is indeed the fourth dimension; and games that allow you to manipulate it are a dime a dozen these days.

Yup and argueably way before that, to any game with an aspect of time, traveling through at exactly the normal pace still makes it 4D. Cheap, but thats never stopped anything being a nice marketing term.

I think the actual fourth dimension, at least when it comes to game, in terms of the leap there was between 2D and 3D, is the area that surrounds you - is it contextual to you, ior does it have existence aside from your actions.
Clever, could you define any real-world dimensions to that of a representation and add those too - eg dimensions of a game 1,2,3 - physical disc, 4 - physical time, 5,6,7 - vitrual object, 8 - virtual time?

Sorry double post.

Awesome! I can't wait to download this on my 360! er...

Seriously though, it is about time game devs realize they need to show off the GAME in an advertisement and not just miscellaneous clips of people doing random things (i.e. nerds sitting on a couch saying "she kicks high" or some random guy yelling at the camera).

So the whole thing will look like this... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:8-cell-simple.gif

Im glad Sony are making an effort with Killzone, god knows that it could be a great series if they put the time and effort in. Another FPS clone with a splash of dark paint isnt going to sell consoles.
