The Street Fighter 4 You'll Never Play

Meet the Street Fighter 4 that existed before the game we're playing today: Street Fighter 4 Flashback.

Imagined in part by Siliconera [http://www.sirlin.net/] reveals a game remarkably similar to the SF4 we know today, despite a few differences.

Like SF4, Flashback features 2D gameplay rendered in 3D. The roster, just like SF4's, is made completely of classic Street Fighter 2 characters (Sakura's there too), along with a couple of new characters. The "flashback" theme, which manifests itself in gameplay with the ability to rewind the game by a few seconds once a round, is based on the same idea that SF4's grounded in: people really loved SF2. "Street Fighter 2 was the phenomenon," the document reads. "The casual player will relate to Chun Li and Blanka far better than to Twelve and Q (from SF3: Third Strike). That's why we want to return mostly to the SF2 / Alpha era where we can focus on nostalgic story moments and characters." The game would have also featured a single-player mode with Ninja Gaiden-style third-person 3D action that focused on Ryu's backstory.

Taking the nostalgia game to a whole other level, Flashback also proposed to provide every single Street Fighter game previously released available in arcade-perfect emulations as unlockable rewards, as well as a 3D version of Super Turbo. That, I could get behind.

Overall, it sounds like they were really on the same page as Capcom with this game, at least in terms of the nostalgic spirit. Same goes for the control system, which ditches the Hadoken-style joystick movements for a drastically simplified system where there are only four attack buttons and you pull off specials by pressing a single direction and a button. Capcom obviously didn't go for this for SF4, but it is the system employed in Japan-only fighter Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.

The typically outspoken Sirlin has never been shy about saying that SF4 as we know it isn't how he'd want it if we had his way. "I have a very different idea about how to usher in a new era of Street Fighter, but this isn't it," he told 1UP in an interview [http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=2&cId=3171710]. I don't know, the general idea for Flashback, even if the specifics vary pretty greatly, seems to be very much in line with what SF4 represents. It seems like Flashback would have simplified Street Fighter even more than SF4 does - SF4, despite its familiar look and feeling, is still very much a complicated game.

Flashback never got past the proposal stage - only some concept art and rough 3D models ever came out of the design doc. Still, it's interesting to look at what could have been Street Fighter 4 - would you guys have wanted to play this game?

I take back any skepticism I've had over Street Fighter 4.

While I still get infuriated with getting beat up by my friend, I actually enjoy it, and I'm awesome with E.Honda of all people. And I even beat my friend a couple of times :D

Oh, I'm far from a convert. I still despise fighting games (mainly Brawl) with a passion, but SF4 is one of the few of the genre that I enjoyed. I'm on the fence of actually buying it myself, but I know I'd probably get over it quickly.

Pffft, unless you have an arcade stick ready, I don't think you're in any position to call out OWNAGE are you? ;P

Yes, it is. Just an over-simplified, repetitive one that is more concerned with fan service and giving its gamers the warm fuzzies than it is with craft and technique. That does not make it a bad game mind you: I find Brawl a great deal of fun to play with the right number of people. However, I find SF4 more satisfying in that when I win, it really feels like I executed the better tactics.

As to the question in the article: yes, I would like to play this game (especially the single-player adventure mode), but I would not want it to be Street Fighter 4. Street Fighter Flashback maybe, but the only official, numbered entries in the Street Fighter series should be one-on-one fighters. Call me picky, but that's just how it should be.

I figured as much, given your tone. :)

That was a pre-emptive strike against all the people who will not pick up on your tone, rush to agree with you, and enumerate all the reasons why Brawl is, indeed, NOT a fighting game.

He can always use a Guitar Hero 360 controller, though.

Lies, I related to Q faster than any other character in the series. The mysterious 7 foot tall man with a trenchcoat and a metal mask? Well, maybe not the easiest thing to relate to, I guess it was more his attitude and style that drew me towards him. In terms of how evil he is compared to past SF characters, I'd say he's up there with Bison, but Q is completely unrestrained, starting fights by terrorizing random citizens, and ending them by crushing his downed opponent's neck. THAT's how you get things done.

Seriously, I hope that if Capcom adds more characters that they bring Q back.

The dark side welcomes you. :)

I do wish they would do something about the controls though. The timings are kind of nuts I have to slide my fingers all over the place to pull off certain combos just because the input window is too damned narrow to do it sanely with a pad. Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm uses a control system where specials are pulled off with a single direction and a button press. Guess what in the hands of a thinking human being the fights could get pretty intense and the average person would be able to actually execute moves and combos and could spend more time figuring out when to execute a move rather than if they can pull it off.

Heck I think Ninja Gaiden/Ninja Gaiden 2 would be good examples for fighting games to follow all of the moves are simple to input but the player has to know when and where to use them. You don't need all of the BS in most fighting games to actually create a deep engine. Nor do you need to have a game that favors a specific type of button layout (That of the arcade stick) to have a game pros can really work to the bone.

How is brawl not a fighting game? Brawl isn't a traditional fighting game but it is a fighting game. I'm not s SSB fanboy but I disagree with people who say that.
