Ex-Bioshock Devs Announce New Roguelike City of Brass

The new title from Uppercut Games is a Bioshock-inspired roguelike with influences from Arabian Nights and Indiana Jones.

Uppercut Games was founded in 2011 by Ed Orman, Andrew James and Ryan Lancaster, who have worked on games likeFallout: Tactics, Bioshock, XCOM. Its resume includes the mech brawler series EPOCH and combat-free title Submerged. Now the developer has announced its newest game, a roguelike inspired by Indiana Jones and Arabian Nights titled City of Brass.

As you can see in the trailer above, City of Brass casts you as a thief in a city filled with treasures, traps, and deadly enemies. You'll have a whip and a scimitar at your disposal, so you can hack and slash your enemies, or trip, disarm, or swing away from them.

City of Brass is coming to Steam this fall, and to PS4 and Xbox One in 2018. You can find more information on the game over on its official website [https://www.cityofbrassgame.com].

I'll be honest from the gameplay trailer it looks like a decent adventure roguelike that could turn out to be fun but that would be dependent on how quickly encounters become repetitive. Also animations looked a little stiff so they'll have to smooth those out before I'd consider getting it. Otherwise I'll keep an eye on it.

Huh. That setting looks rather interesting. I'll keep an eye on it.

Hmm, looks promising. I love the aesthetic and setting. Haven't really had many (if any) decent-to-great games set in an Arabian-Nights sort of setting in quite a while. Last I can remember was Prince of Persia, and those pretty much peaked at Sands of Time.

Color me intrigued. Adding it to my Steam wishlist, so I can keep an eye on it.

Bioshock-inspired
Wha-? How? In what way?

I mean....unless we're basing that on this new game being in first person, the combat looking a bit clunky, and parts of the dev team having some loose affiliation with the first Bioshock game, I don't see Bioshock in there.

Not tryin' to be a dick about it, just trying to parse the line. If there're elements of Bioshock in there I'd like to see 'em. There are aspects of Bioshock we don't seen enough of in games today, so having a new game contain some of them would be quite nice.

Yet another roguelike bores me because I'm not particularly a fan of the genre in the first place, but the setting definitely interests me.

Looks more like Dishonored minus the stealth aspect. Melee combat and traversal/utility powers via the whip. Which I guess you could call Bioshock inspired since it introduced the one hand powers/one hand weapon setup. Unless the city's an alternate history retro-sci fi dystopia, that was Bioshocks other main thing.

Arright. I'm mildly intrigued.

Looks clunky though. Could really have used a bit of animation pizzazz a la Dishonoured.

So...Prince of Persia and Dishonoured had a baby?

As in the game or the trilogy? Because if the former...damn. Means I can't expect things to get better. :(

(Yes, I'm playing Sands of Time right now and it's...alright, I guess.)

An indie studio has made a Roguelike? Next you'll be telling me France makes wine, Las Vegas has casinos, and Donald Trump has a Twitter habit.

In all fairness, it's kind of pretty, but I am sick to death of the permadeath compulsion loop. It's a cheap way to make half a game's worth of content stretch four times as long as a full game ordinarily would, and it needs to stop.

Egh, your mileage will vary. The later entries in the series added new mechanics and whatnot to switch things up a bit. Some worked, others didn't. For me, though, the primary reason I enjoyed the first game so much was because it had that strong, fairy-tale-like feel of an Arabian Night story. It had an air of mystery and mysticism to its fantasy. The latter games started drifting their narratives more towards a summer fantasy-action movie than a fairy tale.

All around, though, they're all still solid action-adventure/platformers.

So the game title is no reference to the Efreet City on the elemental plane of fire from the D&D Multiverse? http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/City_of_Brass

Likely a reference to this:

Which may indeed have "served as inspiration" for the D&D one.
