This Year's Minecon Will Be a Livestream Rather Than a Live Convention

There will be a Minecon this year, but it won't be an actual convention. There will be some local events, however.

Fans of Minecraft have been attending Minecon since its inception in 2010. The convention has been held all over the world in the years since, with the exception of 2014, when no convention was held. This year, Mojang is making another big change to the event, moving from a physical gathering to a livestream.

The event, which will now be known as "Minecon Earth," will take place on Saturday, November 18 at 1 PM ET, and will last about 90 minutes. If you're still in the mood for a local get-together, Mojang plans to set up special screenings in movie theaters and "Official Minecraft Community Events" for fans. The developer said of these events,

"Unlike previous MineCons, these local gatherings will be hosted by community-led partners such as Minefaire, Minevention and Blockfest (a brand new event by the nice folks at Multiplay. These partners (along with many more to come) have gained our official stamp of approval to throw authentic in-person Minecraft experiences. You'll get to meet your favourite YouTubers and streamers, compete in tournaments and costume contests, see unique content and more."

While those events may be interesting for fans, the specific events have not been announced yet, and Mojang notes that they may take place at a different time than Minecon Earth.

Finally, Mojang confirmed that there will be limited edition merchandise that fans will be able to purchase around the time of the livestream. You can find all of the info that's been released about the event so far over on the official Minecon website [https://minecraft.net/en-us/minecon/].
