Virgin Radio Reaches Wii and PS3

Virgin Radio offers streaming music content on the Wii and Playstation 3.

Yesterday, Virgin Radio launched a special version of its Virgin Radio Player [http://www.virginradio.co.uk/listen/] that is compatible with both the Wii and Playstation 3 web browsers. The player allows console owners to stream radio content, purchase tickets and CDs and download songs. Stations offered through the service include Virgin Radio, Virgin Radio Xtreme, Virgin Radio Classic Rock and Virgin Radio Groove.

Virgin Radio digital media director James Cridland commented on the importance of being console-friendly. "As PlayStations and the Wii are incapable of coping with Windows Media and Realplayer, they are difficult to develop for. But we have managed to make our radio play well on both of these platforms using the mp3 streaming we have.

"It?s great for us to achieve another new media 1st and be the only UK radio station available on both of these massively popular games consoles. People are treating the consoles as part of their home entertainment media centre, and now Virgin Radio will be part of that experience. This platform has great growth potential, particularly among early-adopters and 25-44 audience popular with advertisers. Playstation 3 or Wii will become the entertainment hub in your front room. We have worked hard to make the station available on as many different platforms as possible."
