id Software Supports Steam with 22 Games

Valve offers id Software's collection of hits on the Steam network.

Two of the standout shapers of the shooter genre, id Software and Valve, have partnered to distribute id's robust catalogue of first-person shooters and platformers via Valve's Steam download service.

"Valve pioneered digital delivery of videogames with Steam. As a game developer themselves, Valve understands what developers and game players want and need in an online distribution system, and Steam delivers," said Todd Hollenshead, Chief Executive Officer of id Software.

Gabe Newell, Co-Founder and President of Valve, said, "We can't overstate our admiration for id, its games and the technical advancements the company has delivered to help move the industry forward during the past 15 years. Like many other studios, Valve was born when we licensed the Quake engine to build our first game. We're proud to welcome id to Steam and give people around the world an easy way to play the games that have inspired everyone here at Valve."

Some of the older ones, it seems, are running on modified versions of DOSBox [http://dosbox.sourceforge.net]. There was a bit of a fiasco [http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/08/05/1951243] when it was discovered that apparently this was being done in a way that violated the license for DOSBox; do the intrepid reporters of The Escapist have any follow-ups to that? (You might be able to scoop the other sites!)

I was following the DOSBox incident, but I've read now that the problem has now been at least slightly mended by id and/or Valve including the GPL text and certain credits inside the downloads. Whether this actually covers the companies from their legal responsibilities is unclear, and I'm not enough of an open-source licensing expert to give a verdict on the future of the Creative Commons group and the developers.
