Nintendo Records Profit Spike for Second Quarter

Nintendo is riding high on the back of second quarter financial results, which include a 144 percent spike in profits.

Nintendo's net sales rose by 132.5 percent to $6.09 billion, with net income registering at a 143.7 percent increase, to $1.16 billion

A regional hardware breakdown over the same period reveals that almost 80 percent of total revenue was generated by sales outside Japan, with the Americans edging out Europe to the tune of $2.35 billion to $2.16 billion.

Breaking the sales down by region non-Japanese sales accounted for 77.9 percent of total revenue, with the Americas generating ¥267.9 billion ($2.35 billion) in revenues, Europe ¥246.1 billion ($2.16 billion) and the rest of the world ¥27.0 billion ($237 million).

The company also detailed hardware sales over the last sixth months, with the Nintendo DS now having sold 53.64 million units worldwide since launch. 19.71 million of the console have been sold in Japan, 16.06 million in the Americas and 17.88 million in the rest of the world. A total of 13.35 million Nintendo DS were sold worldwide in the last six months alone.

Nintendo estimates it has sold 13.17 million Wiis worldwide: 3.67 million sold in Japan, 5.46 million in the Americas and 4.04 million in the rest of the world. More than 7 million of those were sold in the past half-year, the company says.

In light of strong Wii and Nintendo DS hardware and software sales, Nintendo also pumped its full-year forecasts pumped to $13.59 billion, yielding a net income of $2.41 billion.
