Killzone 2 Shoots Up Your Browser

A Killzone 2 add-on for Firefox and Internet Explorer turns your everyday internet browsing into a Time Crisis-style shoot-em-up.

Regardless of what you think about the game, Sony's gotta earn some credit for its marketing of Killzone 2, which has gone beyond what we'd usually expect from a gajillion-dollar ad campaign. First there was the "browser toolbar [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/89586-New-Killzone-2-Ad-Is-Playable] that lets you do some Helghast killing right in the middle of your preferred internet browser.

Here's how it works: You register and make a username/password, install the program, restart your browser, and there'll be a not-too-obstructive toolbar underneath your default browser one. Enable that and you'll see the thing will start "searching for Helghast." At this point you may as well go back to your regular online activities while you wait for the thing to work its magic. Go read Missed Connections [http://sfbay.craigslist.org/search/mis/?query=w4m] on Craigslist and pray the girl you saw downtown wrote about you or something.

Eventually, your browser will start flashing all these alert messages, and Helghast soldiers will start popping up right on top of whatever you were doing at the time. You click on them to shoot, and get bonuses for headshots, multiple bodyshots, etc. When you're done, your score gets uploaded to the site's leaderboards. You can even start up a "squad" and play with up to four other people on other computers. Pretty nifty.

Only thing is, just be sure to have your browser pointed to the right website when you've got the toolbar enabled. Wouldn't want some Helghast interrupting on certain online activities. Actually, Alice over at the Wonderland blog, who Unskippable [http://www.wonderlandblog.com/wonderland/2009/02/killzones-toolbar-promo-game.html] when she was attacked by Helghast. "I disabled the toolbar, because I really wanted to go read The Escapist, but as promos go, this is pretty cute," she wrote. Read The Escapist, huh? Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.

Has anyone else noticed Sony seems to have gone into overdrive marketing over this? Which is interesting, since as far as I was aware they were always the least advert-orientated of the consoles.

Popups are highly annoying but when they are killzone 2 shaped popups they are the BEST THING EVER.

Killzone 2 is currently being seen as one of the saving graces of the ps3, so I'm not surprised they're throwing everything they've got behind marketing it. A browser game is an interesting concept though, certainly an original one which would connect well with the youth of today being heavily dependent on computers and the internet as sources of information (I include myself as one of those people before anyone tries to be smart).

Or rather, when they are a game that you signed up to play they are awesome.

Haha, this is brilliant. It makes me want to own a PS3 which i suppose is one of the reasons they are advertising so extensively (EDIT: Haha, as i said this a Killzone advert came on the tele as well.)
I dont even mind the huge amount of advertising as the whole Killzone universe is one that i love ever since the glorious ps2 days.

I've downloaded it in FireFox, and it's pretty neat. A good way to get people pumped for the game.

For some reason, my friend got Killzone 2 before me (THAT SON OF A *****!) but he brought it over, I played it a bit, and he let me borrow Bioshock. So now I just have to wait a day or two and Killzone 2 shall be all mine!

You may have the same problem like me. I was born in February and I just typed in 2 instead of 02 so I couldn't register.
