The Witcher Demo Now Available

RPG fans still on the fence will now have some help making up their minds, as Atari has announced the release of a playable demo for The Witcher.

The demo will include the first part of the game's prologue, launching the story and training the player in the basics of combat, as well as the entire first act of the game. The story will begin to come together around Geralt, the game's central character, as he works to survive in a cold and uncaring world.

Based on the novels by Polish author GameRankings.com [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrzej_Sapkowski]. As Geralt, players will become a professional monster slayer in a complex world rife with real-life issues in which there is no right and wrong, only choices and consequences.

More information about The Witcher as well as links to the demo are available at www.atari.com [http://www.thewitcher.com].

Interestingly (considering the comic), the author of the books wanted the name translated to Hexer rather than Witcher. I can't say I know a word of polish, but in swedish Häxa = Witch.

So... Yeah...

I hope they fix the dialogue in the prologue for the demo!

Appearently the localization isn't that good. They have cut out large parts of the conversations from the original Polish version (I presume someone was worried the introduction wasn't fast-paced and "actiony" enough) which makes some conversations end abruptly or even incomprehensible. Also the annoying habit the grizzled old Witcher leader has of calling the female team member "babe" (and in the next sentence tells of one of his subordinates he should respect her). That was not in the original. It gives a negative first impression.
