Electronic Arts Confirms Command & Conquer FPS

Command & Conquer [http://www.ea.com] universe.

Players will take on the role of Forward Battle Commander Ricardo Vega as he commands an assortment of elite squads to battle a global crisis 11 years after the Third Tiberium War [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_Tiberium_War]. The game will mix FPS action with tactical squad combat, giving the player control over infantry, armor and air units in either single player or online multiplayer warfare.

"After two years of pre-production, it is exciting to finally reveal this game and its rich fiction to the world," said EA Los Angeles Executive Producer Chris Plummer. "We've put a lot of effort into evolving the tactical shooter experience by taking core gameplay compulsions like commanding, choice and dominating your enemies and delivering them in first-person."

"We're very proud to be part of a project that has the potential to really make a mark on the canon of sci-fi fantasy fiction," he said.

"EALA has a long history of developing groundbreaking real-time strategy games with the Command & Conquer series," added Mike Verdu, vice president and general manager at EA Los Angeles. "That series also originally introduced the Tiberium universe to gamers worldwide. Now, we are growing Tiberium from a simple backdrop to a fully realized universe with its own unique, hybrid squad-based shooter gameplay. This is the birth of a new franchise - we couldn't be more excited."

Tiberium is currently slated for a fall 2008 release for the PC, PlayStation 3 [http://www.xbox.com].

I personally thought the biggest problem with Renegade wasn't the mediocre story, the obvious inexperience in making shooters or the lack of support, it was the lack of atmosphere.

In Tiberian Sun every part of the game, the enviroment, the music, the missions all communicate a sense of helplessnes and doom, like everyone knows they most likely fight for nothing; that even if they win they lose. Renegade was the standard one-liner parade with every character being (trying to be) super-cool and stereotypical.

We've already seen dozen-shooters, we know what they offer. BioShock wasn't a 9/10 because of the combat system, it was because of the storytelling-process and atmosphere. If they manage to keep the sense of hopelessnes I think it might be an interesting game.
