THQ Has 50/50 Chance Of Going Bankrupt

Publisher THQ [http://www.thq.com/] is at serious risk of following Midway into insolvency, according to analyst Mike Hickey, who said the company has a 50/50 chance of going bankrupt.

THQ's fortunes have suffered a rapid reversal, from over $1 billion in revenues and "record-breaking profits" in 2007 to a $334 million loss since mid-2008. The company's Janco Partners [http://www.google.ca/finance?client=ob&q=NASDAQ:THQI] analyst Mike Hickey has gone so far as to suggest THQ is looking at even odds of bankruptcy.

"You have mediocre product and you're running out of cash," he said. "Not the situation they want to be in right now."

THQ CEO Brian Farrell naturally dismissed such comments, saying, "When the stock price is depressed, the naysayers can have their day in the sunshine. But we have a plan that we're very confident will give us cash and return the company to profitability." Part of that plan includes chopping $220 million in costs next year and laying off almost 600 employees, and the company has also borrowed $26 million to give itself some breathing room.

Unfortunately, THQ is also looking at the end of its licensing deal with Wedbush Morgan [http://www.pixar.com/] analyst Michael Pachter said the agreement wasn't as lucrative as it once was. Farrell would not say whether THQ would pursue a renewal of the contract.

Analysts say it's possible for THQ to bounce back if things go well, but the margin for error is "thin." And if things don't work out, THQ's heavy reliance on licenses could make the company less attractive to potential suitors. "You want a strong basket of original properties that are of high quality, that's what acquirers are looking for," Hickey said. "Otherwise you have Midway [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/89814-Midway-to-Sell-Off-Mortal-Kombat]."

Everybody, go out and buy extra copies of Dawn of War and STALKER. Now. Don't even read this, just go...

On topic: It's a shame because THQ are a great company, they actually develop good games. Sadly we haven't seen many new games for a while, and that's a major problem. If the company had managed to pull off some decent games more recently then maybe things would be better. As it happens, for various reasons, one of which is the quality of THQ games, I would be very disappointed to see it go under. Ensemble and Midway are two good companies that have already gone under, hopefully THQ will not be following them.

What's the revenue figure for that money loss period? I'd like to know how much they were pulling in while losing that money.

Of course the best thing we could hope for would be a list of costs and revenue for the games released in that period...

What happened to the next Company of Heroes? Those bastards had better not get themselves killed off before they release that, or atleast send it over to someone else.

What an injustice! The world needs more Bratz and Destroy all Humans games!

Seriously, I can't remember the last game of theirs I was interested in enough to buy. Might have something to do with why they're closing down, I can't be the only one.

EDIT: After reading the wiki article [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_THQ_games], did they make anything but licensed games? Look at all those WWE/F titles! Wow, SpongeBob games, too.

According to the LA Business Journal, THQ pulled in over $1 billion in total revenues last year.

This'll be a damn shame if THQ goes down. They're one of the few companies that'll risk putting out some of the quirkier titles like STALKER.

EDIT: Holy christ typo city.

If it's a 50/50 chance they should go to a casino and stick their remaining money on Red.
No not only red. Uneven and red. I can't remember it correctly but I think that there are more fields that way.

With the qaulity they put out on a regular basis they should close down or join with another studio/publisher. Because of the cost of modern game production they have no choice....

Rockstar can do it because they put out 1 maybe 2 titles every year or 3 and at least one of those makes a huge profit, the Large but small/indie dev/publisher is a ship ready to sink because of the cost of development.

THQ was only the publisher for the Saint's Row games. I'm certain that Volition (the developer) could find someone to fill that role.

On the one hand, I like THQ because they've been relatively DRM and Launcher-App free.

On the other hand, they couldn't program a working RTS AI if they had a cheat sheet and three "Wish" spells.

DoW2 makes me side more with the "So long, and thanks for all the fish" end.
I think you're talking about Relic.
