Square Enix: Unreal Engine Bogging Down Last Remnant

Square Enix says problems with the Unreal Engine are to blame for delays in bringing out the PlayStation 3 version of the role-playing title The Last Remnant.

Citing "development reasons," the team said the Epic middleware engine simply takes longer to develop for the PS3 than the Xbox 360.

"It was only really workable after Unreal Tournament was published, so this was mainly a development decision," the team told GameSpy [http://xbox360.gamespy.com/xbox-360/the-last-remnant/882009p1.html].

Square Enix did say that the engine made things easier early on with "cut-scenes and such," but there were problems "in overcoming the differences in development culture between Square Enix and Epic."

I guess that finally explains the RPG explosion on the system originally made for trigger-happy frat boys.

I still think square-enix should of sticked with the Crystal Tools than using the Unreal engine. Not only is it more foreign for them to get used to, the character designs just doesn't look that great. The skin texture looks odd, but maybe that's just me.
