Sony Announces Life With PlayStation Online Service

PlayStation 3 [http://www.sony.com], this time with Life With PlayStation, an upcoming PlayStation Network service that will give users access to real-time news and weather from around the world.

Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai discussed the coming service yesterday, according to Next-Gen [http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=11117&Itemid=2], which described it as working "on two axes: place and time." The service will display a 3-D representation of Earth, featuring information on different cities including weather and news headlines, which can be used to access full news articles.

"It's only the PS3 that can provide such a unique experience," Hirai said. "Life With PlayStation proposes a new lifestyle for PS3. As many people turn on their TVs in the morning when they wake up, users can use their PS3 to download worldwide news in real-time or check weather and temperature of travel destinations."

Kirai added that the current Life With PlayStation model is only the beginning. "In the future, we'll build a system that can virtually present stored photos or movies according to recorded time and place, allowing users with their friends and family to enjoy them visually in chronological order," he said. Dynamic in-game advertising and "charged downloadable content" are also planned for later integration. More details, as well as a launch date, will be released later.

You do know that achievements have been around in games forever right, the only thing that Microsoft did was make it universal.... Would you be mad if Microsoft came out with a web browser for their console? Let's be serious here Wiichannels are really not all that different from RSS feeds that you get on your PC for example. You think Nintendo thought of the idea first? They didn't even think of Motion controls first.

Now sure copying can suck ass sometimes, but this really is not one of those times.

I agree, plus who really uses their Wii for news and weather updates? I used to when it actually seemed cool at the time but then i just didn't care about those stupid channels and went on to play some games.

don't get me wrong, the same thing is probably going to happen to the Life service on the PS3 but what else are they going to do? As far as i know, xbox360 is the only one that doesn't have news updates and weather updates (to my knowledge).

You are correct, personally I would not be mad if Microsoft came out with a web browser for the 360. I will commend Nintendo for using a real web browser as the basis for the browser used on their console. I wish Sony did something simillar and got Mozilla to do the browser for the PS3 because the current one sucks ass.

This seems ultimately irrelevant. I doubt that it will replace the morning news because this is interactive. The reason people turn on the TV and watch the news in the morning is that they can do so while still getting ready to go to work or school. I also expect that getting detailed weather and world news reports will continue to be much easier via computer.

"charged downloadable content"? Like what? This basically seems like they decided to rip off Google Earth and News and mesh them together.
