Metal Gear Maker Lists Influential Games

Hideo Kojima has highlighted the top five games that influence his design.

The mind of the man who creates a series as influential as Metal Gear Solid must've been inspired somewhere along his life.

In a recent interview with Yomiuri Newspaper, Hideo Kojima covered his design philosophy and the predecessors that left an impression on him.

The job of the developer, he points out, is to address his audience. "Games are about the sense of hospitality, and a game designer can be compared to sushi chef. The designer makes a game according to the taste of his customers," he explained.

Although some of his trademark humor is often questioned by gamers and critics, he sees his jokes as adding emotional attachment to the titles.

"I'm often asked not to include such elements in a hard-boiled game. But I can't help it," laughed Kojima. "My ideal game is something that makes you want to come back to the world later. It is not enough only to make you enjoy the sense of tension. I want game users to laugh or cry a little."

When asked for a few influential titles, Kojima listed:
[ul]
[li]Super Mario Bros.[/li]
[li]Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken[/li]
[li]Xevious[/li]
[li]Another World[/li]
[li]Metal Gear Solid[/li]
[/ul]

Kojima may be slightly cocky or just proud of his work, but the last game on the list is likely meant as an example of how his own work has evolved over the years, with MGS being a landmark title and Kojima's 3D debut.

I personally thought that the toilet jokes added to the character, like something's not right with him/her (AKA Akiba)

Oh Kojima, you crazy genius bastard.

I thought the ending credits to MGS4 were even funnier, in the first roll of credits you may see the title:

I thought so to at the beginning but then when he developed it into the whole cornball love-interest angle with Meryl I thought he overstepped the mark and was insulting my intelligence. He does add some nice touches that really add to the game, but in that example he overplayed his hand IMO.

I personally laughed so much at that cutscene, it was like Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It was so fucking halarious, especially since I didn't know the crazyness of Kojima until i played MGS4.

Though how he goes from constapated dork to a total badass is beyond me.

I maybe mis-reading this, but if your trying to say that the whole 'love interest thing' at the end of the game just came out of nowhere, insulting the audiance for not 'seeing' it sooner...

Well, it 'was' there, it was just very subtle...
Aka, Akiba 'looking' at Meryl, until she yells at him for not paying attention.
It doesn't help that the whole time akibas face was completely obscured for 90% of the game, so you could see any 'facial emotion' that would show some kind of 'crush' on her...
Though Meyrl actually saying 'yes' to akiba was kinda out of the blue considering how much she and her buddies ragged on the guy... But then, in some ways it would make sense for her to want a 'weak' man that she once depanced in the past. ;)

I loved the Combat love scene between Meryl and Johnny. And I loved how they acted as one, even though they weren't using nano machines to communicate each others thoughts.

What? He's his own influence?

In that case, I'm my own biggest hero.
I think he means he has learned stuff from his past games, and any good developer should.

Nah, I just thought it was cliche and unneccesary IMHO. It didn't ruin the game, but I don't feel it added to it. I suppose you could write it off as a tip of the hat to Mr and Mrs Smith, and the whole bumbling, pathetic man falling for the strong and independent woman is a very Japanese thing. Fine, have the scene where they are rolling around killing people but he could have reduced the wedding scene at the end by half. By the time it got around to showing what happened to Solid Snake (which had some MAJOR reveals) I was begging for it to stop because I had sat there just watching for 30 minutes. That and it was 4am and I needed the sleep.
