Early Look At New Wolfenstein

Wolfenstein [http://www.shacknews.com] title, describing it rather succinctly as "another Raven first person shooter."

The new game will once again feature American super-soldier B.J. Blazkowicz squaring off against Hitler's goons, both conventional and supernatural, in an attempt to prevent them from seizing some kind of mystical superweapon that will enable them to crush the Allied armies and conquer the world. This time around, they're after the Black Sun, an energy source that exists in the other-dimensional world called "the Veil."

The Veil, a "green-hued, energy-filled realm" that exists unseen alongside our own, gives Blazkowicz unique powers in combat, including the near-ubiquitous time-bending ability that slows combat to a virtual crawl. Along with Nazis, the Veil is also populated by bee-like creatures, and Raven said other alien creatures will show up as the game progresses. In the more conventional world outside the Veil, the game is described as "typical Wolfenstein fare," although enemy A.I. is now smart enough to make use of cover, and some environmental features will be destructible thanks to the Havok [http://www.havok.com/]-powered physics engine.

The game, in development at here [http://www.ravensoft.com/].

(Hums Indiana Jones theme)

Fingers crossed, the game will be as good as we are all hoping it will be.

Bullet-time, don't see that very often -_-
But, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was pretty good, so who knows, this new one though...seems a little gimmicky *shrug*...

Man...I'm starting to get worried about all these companies. EVERYONE is making an FPS. There are literally going to be like 20 of them hitting the market in the next year or two. Only so many of those games can rope in a real profit and the others...I don't want to use the phrase Atari crash but it's what this is looking like.

So the Nazi's next greatest plan in the grand scheme of evil domination is taming mutant bees from another dimension to rule the world, but an American with super powers will stop them.

Meanwhile, we lean that Bettie Page is a robot with a shell of polymorphic liquid metal, sent into the past with firm goal to generate a new era of decadance, but Benjamin Franklin will stand up, as he's resurrected by the Headband of Eternal Life. His main power is an ability to control magnetic fields, grab distant objects and throw them back towards enemies or use them as cover.

Me want.

Well as long as it's the kind of wolfenstein I know and love then I've got no problem with a new coat of paint. Can't live with sprites forever.

Stop me if I'm wrong (some jackass probably said you "You're wrong!), but wasn't the original Wolfenstein's story incredibly cheesy and cliche as well? I thought that game was awesome because of it's gameplay, and well, I'd expect fans to ask for improvements on gameplay and sod the story... of course, as stated before, I'm probably wrong.

Coming to a porno theater near you: The Domme-inator!

This new Wolfenstein reads like a gimmicky bag of fail. Thanks, but no thanks, this one is staying on the storeshelf.

As cheesy as being inside a Nazi fortress and killing nazis, yes.

I'm so burned out on the wave of 'me too' fps's that are coming out/have come out that it takes a game legitimately trying to break the mold for me to even be remotely interested. That whole news blurb reads like they took Half-Life, Crysis, and FEAR and threw them in a blender.

FPSs have fallen into a trap where everyone just copies each other and developers are scared shitless of attempting to break the mold. Granted, some companies have tried and I tip my hat to them, but the big guns just refuse to do anything except pump out sequels that rehash things I've already played or just put out copycat stand alones.

Shiny graphics does not a new game make.

You know what though, Wolfenstein 3d was the first FPS, not to mention it was ridiculous to begin with.
Wrong. Catacombs 3-d was out a year before. Hovertank 3-d too.

Anyway, same story different local. Can't say I'll be expecting too much from this.

I'm not looking for it to revolutionize the genre, but I have to admit that my low expectations won't keep me from buying the thing. I'm an FPS fan and a Wolfenstein fan, so I'll be in line to drink the Kool-Aid. I actually replayed RTCW a couple months ago, and it was good enough to keep me entertained. If nothing else, I give id and their Raven homies credit for at least doing something different with the WW2 sub-genre; I'd still rather play RTCW than MOH or COD.

I don't know....

It just doesn't look fun...

Sure it is pretty enough, but the graphics/gameplay/shooting nonsense so far just looks too much like Turning Point: Fall of Liberty. Yeah it's too early to say something like that, but it just reminds me of that game for some reason.

The atmosphere and background of the second Wolfenstein was solid, in a way. There were esoteric elements, but properly merged to the dark ensemble. The science fiction tech was like a toned down Sky Captain sort of stuff, but it was really moderate so it worked as well. Above all, most of the game was about normal nazis, mowed down by a "normal" American soldier.

Now, maybe in a moment of crysis and a craving for realism, Blask is a super hero, and thus can only be matched by super creatures from dimension X.

It might work, only if they don't overexploit the Veil stuff and flood the levels with bees or whatelse.
It can go either way from there, and there's like a fine line between good balance and totally ridiculous.

I see so rather than another Nazi shooter or another bullet time game its a bullet time Nazi shooter!
