Sony Announces Cross Compatibility For Music Game Controllers

PlayStation 3 [http://www.sony.com].

In a message posted on the Rock Band 2 [http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/08/18/ps3-music-peripheral-compatibility-update/] and Konami's Rock Revolution software."

"And yes, you guessed it, Rock Band 2's guitar and drum set will work with Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Revolution," he continued, for people who somehow manage to miss the point. "Conversely, Rock Revolution's drum set will work with both Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2. In addition, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2 will both support the SingStar [http://www.singstargame.com/] microphones."

Shorrock added that Sony was still working on compatibility issues between the current Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles, and said the company hoped to have an announcement shortly.

"Of course each of these great games have their own specific cool features that may not be compatible with other controllers, but this is our first big step in bringing a level of compatibility to music games that is sure to benefit PlayStation 3 consumers," he said.

Compatibility between music game controllers may not be of Earth-shattering importance on the surface, but the fact that neither Xbox 360 [http://www.microsoft.com] and the PlayStation 3 makes even the smallest edge immensely valuable, and the wild popularity of music games means this could turn into a big advantage for Sony if Microsoft fails to respond in a timely fashion.

I wonder if this'll make these games more popular, and thus more profitable, or if Sony is shooting itself in the foot by not making people buy everything over and over again.

I think hopefully its common sense, realising that besides the cost, most people flat out dont have ROOM to store 2 'rock band' sized sets of gaming kit for the sake of 2 games.

I live in a small flat, and even if I could afford Rock Band, the drums would be be packed away when not being played, I just don't have space for that, and even in a larger house, in the room the games are played , two dumkits and 4 guitars are gonna take up some space.

I don't think they're really raking in the profits on the hardware anyways, if they can get people to have the hardware, the customers are kinda pushed to buy expansions to get 'extra value' from owning the hardware.

This is one thing I hope all the consoles jump on the bandwagon to imitate, since having to buy mutiple plastic instruments to play the different games is one of the things thats kept me from buying any of them yet

Good news for Sony. For some reason, I had thought this had something to do with the controllers (as in DualShock and Sixaxis)...

Nope, ever since the advent of the Wii, real imput schemes have been shelved in favor of humongous objects used for controlling 1(or in the ps3's case, 2) games at most.
