UK Government Ad Campaign Attacks "Deadly" Games

A British ad campaign linking early deaths and young gamers has drawn heavy fire from game developers and gamers in the UK and beyond.

The advertisement, which appeared this morning in women's lifestyle press titles such as Star, Reveal and Heat, shows a young boy holding a PlayStation controller and leaning up against a wall with a bored look on his face. The picture is accompanied by the caption: "Risk an early death, just do nothing." The ad comes as part of the Change4Life campaign, a push by the The British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research and Diabetes UK to combat what they see as an increasingly sedentary lifestyle spurred, in part, by the increasing popularity of electronic gaming.

Needless to say, the campaign has sparked outrage. The further statement [http://www.mcvuk.com/news/33460/MCV-complains-to-ASA-over-anti-games-Govt-ad] calling on gamers and people in the industry to join in protesting the campaign.

The main argument of the MCV UK is that not only is the advertising campaign inaccurate, wrongfully demonstrating the effect of games on youth, it also implies that parents should not buy games for their children, potentially hurting the already-suffering UK games industry. Earlier in the week, a survey published by TIGA [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/89862-85-of-UK-Developers-Want-Tax-Breaks] found that UK-based developers were already frustrated by what they saw as the government not doing enough to encourage and aid the growth of the industry compared to their counterparts in other countries.

Furthermore, as Tim Ingham, MCV's Associate Editor argues, this generation of gaming is far more interactive and healthy than previous generations, resulting in a less sedentary and more interactive lifestyle than just, say, watching TV: "Not only have they got the UK's idle, McDonald's-munching youth actually keen to break a sweat - but, more importantly, they've helped them have a genuine giggle with their parents for the first time since
'peek-a-boo!' in the pushchair."

As of yet, there has been no response from the UK government or any of the groups involved in the Change4Life campaign.

hmmm...shame that this was produced by some large & respectable charities as part of what in general is a well intended & good health campaign. That said, I think Sony could sue the crap out of them for using an image of their controller. I kinda hope they do.

How dare you! How very dare you! How can you say that Gamers have early deaths? What about the 40-50 no life WoW players? They're still going, and so am I.

But I am only 14. Hmmm, Touche.

Still, I say the same thing Yahtzee said about violent video games. "No and I find your argument misinformed."

Bloody hell, I thought my (cough) beloved (cough) country was free of the Jack Thompson brigade, and now we find that we drew the short straw. I think cancer and heart experts will be much more difficult to dissuade and prove wrong than an idiotic disbarred attorney. Thanks a lot, guys...

Arggh, after reading the "Washington honours Penny Arcade" story, this takes the piss.
Why is my country full of idiots.

As the 4th largest videogame producing country in the world, we have a certain obligation to keep the industry thriving, to raise our influence aross the world. But to make an uninformed attack on a billion pound industry is ridiculous.

Im actually going to campaign.
God knows I have never campaigned before in my whole life but this has really wound me up.

VIVA LA RESISTANCE!

Because reading magazines is much more active than playing video games. *sigh*

We had Keith Vaz (MP for Leicester - (grumble) My MP). Fortunately, no-one paided any attention to him before the enquiry into his conflict of interest. And by then they weren't interested in his anti-gaming views.

I'm so lucky that I'm out in Charnwood. What with Dorrel and Vaz, there's a bunch of morons that wouldn't look out of place at Swithland Motors.

I'd sign the list but that would probably make it void since I am not a citizen of the U.K. but apparently these people have not heard of Dance Dance Revolution or Wii Fit.

Been playing video games all my life, i don't think i'm dead, overweight or a social reject. (well my afro could scare away small children)

So does this mean staying indoors and reading books/playing an instrument/painting is just as bad?

Bah, being too liberal is just as bad as being too conservative. Both want to control you and censor you, only the reasons are different. What else do these Mrs. Lovejoys say?

-Comic books will rot kids' minds
-Elvis' hips will drive kids into a sexual frenzy
-heavy metal and dungeons and dragons will turn kids into devil worshipers
-Video games will turn kids into murderers.
-Weed funds terrorism

Sigh, when will these idiots learn, it's not the games, it's THE PARENTING. I wish they would stop tip-toeing around and finally rightfully blame the god damn AWFUL parents.

It was so hard not to swear just then.

If you say the campaign's name backwards, it's Life4Change.

A coincidence? I think not...

I can make outrageous insinuations too.

Also, how the fuck can playing video games cause cancer? Just what is Cancer Research's involvement in this campaign?
