Project Origin Renamed To F.E.A.R. 2

Here's some complication we all probably could have done without: Project Origin [http://projectorigin.warnerbros.com/] has been renamed to F.E.A.R. 2, while the status of the original F.E.A.R. 2, which may or may not have been in development, is unknown.

This one needs some explanation, and I suggest you pay attention. In 2005, Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment [http://www.sierra.com/], a different videogame publisher, and while this didn't have any real impact on the original F.E.A.R. title, it did mean complications galore for the inherent sequels.

The reason, you see, is that while Monolith retained the rights to the game's storyline and characters, Sierra - and, by extension, Perseus Mandate [http://www.vivendi.com/], a kind of scorched-earth retconning that's pretty clearly more about making a point than making a game.

But as a result of the recent merger [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/84907] between Activision and Vivendi, everything changed once again. Activision, as expected, did some slash-and-burn of its own as the expense of Sierra, which led to (among other things) the return of the F.E.A.R. 2 name to the open market, presumably the result of Sierra's project being killed. Monolith and WBIE seized the moment, announcing today they have acquired the F.E.A.R. name, and the right to a proper title for their sequel. Because of the considerable marketing already done using the Project Origin name, however, as well as its ties to the F.E.A.R. community (the name was chosen as the winner of a contest), the full name of the sequel will be F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin.

Got it?

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is currently in development for the PC, Xbox 360 [http://www.playstation.com], and is scheduled for released on February 10, 2009.

As long as the enemy AI is as good as it was, and the gunplay is as good as it was, and the scary is as good as it was, I'm totally up for this.

And if the rooms and environments are exactly the same with higher graphical quality will you?

Not actually too complicated, but complicated enough to get the marketing guys in a tizzy. Well, good to see that the name is back where it belongs. I guess the Activision/Vivendi merge did more than just create the terrifying monolith of Activision Blizzard.

Hey, the original FEAR (which I'm playing through right now), is pretty damn fun. If they can expand on that, I really don't care what it's being called.

I loved FEAR, but I thought Perseus Mandate was crap and I haven't even played Extraction Point yet - it's one of those weird add-ons that just refuses to go down in price, and I'm not touching it until it does. So Project Origin is big news for me. The renaming is nice as a way of cutting back on the confusion, but for my money Origin was always going to be the "real" sequel anyway. The Sierra version of FEAR 2 may have worked out as a good game, but if it's not dealing with the aftermath of the synchronicity event then I'm not nearly as interested.

Anyone else disappointed that the game is moving away from the Point Man and focusing on some Delta guy instead? I'm don't think I like the idea of the Point Man's abilities not being unique, even if the new guy has to be surgically augmented to achieve the same thing. (This was one of my big complaints about Perseus Mandate.) I'm hopeful it's a good story, but the ending of FEAR was obviously built as a jumping-off point for the follow-up, and now we're not getting that.

I'm sure they'll just use that as fodder for F.E.A.R. 3: Operation Theseus Directive.

I actually like where you're going with this. It's almost a contest.

I didn't see that coming. Yet another game I'll be keeping my eye on.

I read an interview with the developers some time earlier this year where they said the AI was actually the most notable improvement at the time, which is just insane. To the person who commented on all the levels looking the same, I'm pretty optimistic about that too. Monolith mentioned that the blandness of the levels was the biggest criticism of the original FEAR, so that was the area they decided to focus on most. There are now outdoor levels to complement the indoor levels, and every level is supposedly going to have its own color palette. They also modified the slow-down mode the brighten certain colors rather than dull them like in the original for the same reasons. All in all I'm pretty happy with what I have seen of this title so far.
