GTA4 Hijacks Steam, Vice City Offered Free

In one of the most significant digital distribution deals any publisher has signed, Valve will be offering Rockstar's uber-popular Grand Theft Auto IV for purchase with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City as a free perk.

For $49.99, a $10 discount from the game's launch price, PC gamers awaiting the arrival of the latest grand gangster title from Rockstar can pre-order GTA4 [http://store.steampowered.com/app/12210/] within the next week and receive a free digital copy of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City with their purchase.

Rockstar and Valve have been cooperating with Steam digital downloads since they began selling the classic Grand Theft Auto releases for $9.99. This latest deal is perhaps Valve's largest in terms of promoting its online download service. Released earlier this year to first week sales of $500 million [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/83683-Grand-Theft-Auto-IV-Sets-First-Week-Launch-Record], the chance to own both GTA4 and Vice City for $50 could be an enticing deal for PC gamers who prefer their mobsters on a monitor.

Valve leader Gabe Newell likely sees this high-profile game as a key step in the realization of his "every videogame on Steam" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/79241-Every-Game-Made-To-Come-to-Steam-Newell] goal. "I expect we'll go back in time and eventually pretty much every game that's ever been available will be on there 24/7," noted Newell on his dream that titles past and present will be sold digitally directly to consumers.

Definitely a bargain.

And hey, more power to steam. With a bit of luck we'll all live to see the day where release dates are universal, where games are cheaper, easy and safe to buy and effectively delivered.

That said, I do remember when steam came out and was a pile of buggy, crashing ass. good'ol days.

Very true, but they fixed it.

So Valve continues to offer deals that offline publishers/distributors can't possibly hope/want to match. At this rate they'll be the only publisher on PC, long live our benevolent tyrants!

Hehe, yeah. At least they are better than EA!

I thought I saw it for $39.99 on Steam with this deal, but oh well. I agree with their decision to offer Vice City over San Andreas because it was the superior game in my opinion. I'm not sure whether people will agree with me but I found San Andreas severely lacking in 'fun' and way too big in order to be enjoyable when you must drive for 15 minutes to get to where you're going.

What about those of us who already have Vice City? I bought the complete Rockstar pack, so I already have ALL of the GTA games except 4...

For the first time in a while I don't think I'll be buying from Steam, although under normal circumstances it would be a done deal and moreso considering Vice City has been thrown into the mix. Thanks mostly to the £->$ exchange rate being totally lousy right now and all the offers the UK retailers have going on for Christmas, it actually works out cheaper to buy GTA4 from a store. I might still however get it on Steam, just later on when the cost of things is more favourable.

Non-Valve bundles are always a dodgy area, as duplicate titles most of the time cannot be gifted to someone else like you can with Valve bundles. They may decide to expand the complete Rockstar pack to include GTA4, but it's at their discretion as to whether it is then back-bundled to everyone who had previously bought the bundle.

Hey....Genius idea!

Everyone who's bought Vice City buy GTA 4 and pass their guest pass onto Jack Thompson. I'm sure he's bored by now. :)

Should have offered San Andreas. I would have made an account, just to buy it.
Same. If I didn't already own San Andreas that is! [Evil Grin] [/Evil Grin]
Yeah, I own it too. But you can never have enough San Andreas in your life.
