Original Doom Ported to Flash

A blast from the past rises from the tomb to frag again.

One of the first controversial first-person shooters to really make waves with explicit gore and an over-the-top delivery of brutal violence has returned in an unexpected format. Thanks to the meticulous programming efforts of an enthusiastic fan, a id Software's [http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/470460] seminal Doom is now available to play for free online.

A fellow who simply goes by the name of Mike [http://mike.newgrounds.com/] diligently recompiled the components for the full shareware version of Doom from the source code and ported it to Flash format, allowing the first portion of the classic frag fest to be enjoyed from the comfort of any web browser. The game runs quite well but requires the latest Flash Player 10 plug-in to work properly. Playing with the new one-handed WASD control setup is a breeze. Sadly, there's no music in the Flash version, but the sound effects are still there.

Aside from being free and easily accessible, the port is a great way to take a trip down memory lane for nostalgia's sake. It's also nice to not have to boot up from DOS or upgrade to a 486 computer to play, either. Whether you recall the classic with fondness or are too young to remember its pixelated glory, Doom is worth checking out. A reminder: the game is rated mature.

I will now devote more time to not working,
On second thought, playing this in a worplace might make out to be a sociopath.

I hadn't played this game for a long time until I just recently bought it on Xbox Live. I had forgotten how much fun it is.

The flash version feels a little sluggish, not sure if its just my internet being slow though.

Turn rate isn't quite right...

Still, if they got multi-player for this thing, all bets are off.

YOu can also use Zdoom [www.zdoom.org] for 2k,XP,Vista or Zdaemon [www.zdaemon.org] for single/multiplayer doom.

You could also go full retro and play the Doom Roguelike (Full 2d: ASCII graphics Turn based) at http://doom.chaosforge.org/

Well if you can get ahold of the original Doom 1 or 2 wad files you could use something like jDoom http://www.doomsdayhq.com/

It even supports mouse look which I find helps a ton in an fps, Doom was good but the keyboard only controls are definatly old and a little clunky now. It has a 3d models but you dont actually have to use them, can use the old sprites. It has online multiplayer, I haven't played it in a while though so not sure how large the community is anymore.

There is also another program like this one but I can't remember the name of it.

Edit: Ok Root of all Evil has it, the other one I was trying to remember is Zdoom.

Some features aren't here, like the button on the left.
Yeah I found that too. But thinking back I don't think that button was in the Shareware version. I love the person on the Newgrounds comments that complained that it wasn't the full version. Whilst this is good I do agree that the controls were sluggish. I did enjoy the fact that the cheats remained intact too.
