Burnout Paradise PC Demo Will Include Entire Game

Why so generous? Criterion says they "want all our PC players to be sure it runs perfectly on their system, before they commit to buying it...but there's a lot to show you!" Most PC gamers are familiar with the agony of fully purchasing a PC game and then finding that it runs poorly (or doesn't run at all) on your rig when you get home, despite what it says on the back of the box. It's certainly to Criterion's credit that they're aware that this happens, and want to make sure it doesn't happen to you.

There's a catch, though. "Obviously, there's a limit to just how much you can do and for how long, but we hope you'll agree that there's plenty there to give you glimpse of what the full game has to offer," Criterion wrote. The announcement refrained from detailing what exactly the limit entailed, so if all of this sounds way too good to be true, it might just be.

The demo will be downloadable from Criterion and EA [http://www.ea.com] in February next year, and will also be distributed in "millions of disks".

A solid free demo that really lets you try before you buy: Good idea. I clap.

At least EA is seriously giving this whole "nice guy" thing a solid try. Sure, DRM and used games are still hot issues, but this is a seriously confident step on the part of the studio.

Buy it so it'll encourage a less draconian approach to PC games by the publishers. I'm in no way a racing fan but I'll buy this game simply out of principal to help even if it just a small little bit.

You could always just laugh at them for making a potentially colossal blunder. Having the full game in the demo and just having a time limit or something to that extent works perfectly on consoles, but it's the worst idea imaginable for the PC. If they release this demo, there won't be any point in them releasing the full game in the first place. Everyone will be able to get an unlocked version for free off a torrent.

It's the principal of the matter that counts. If we (the gaming community) could support Criterion and EA in their attempt to be more generous and thoughtful maybe down the road more and more companies might try this "Try before you buy" tactic.
It would be a much better way having a large install base at launch, though the fear of somebody removing the time limit is very real.
I wholeheartedly commend EA for giving this the green light.

Anyone who wants a cracked version of any game can always get it at launch, it won't really make too much difference, pirates work fast, this makes it easier than most games though.
