World of Warcraft's $15 Sex Change

Feel like you picked the wrong gender for your WoW character? Your problems can now be solved for a meager fee.

Whether you feel like making some major life-changing decisions for your favorite now offering [http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/index.xml] a handy new character re-customization feature that lets you make all manner of visual adjustments. No questions asked.

As advertized: "Ready for a new look in World of Warcraft but the barbershop's just not cutting it? You can now change a character's gender, face, skin color, and other cosmetic features (such as tauren horn styles or a night elf's facial markings) using the brand-new character re-customization service."

For a flat fee of $15 (plus taxes), you can access the character re-customization service from the WoW account management page. The fee gives you access to make major cosmetic adjustments to a single character. There's also an option to change their name, if you choose. Unfortunately, the service doesn't let you change your character's race or class. Bummer.

I'm dismayed I can't use this to make my Druid a Gnome :(
I'm dismayed that someone at Blizzard thought spelling "skills" in that manner was a good idea.

For $15 I'd expect it to enable a total respec of the character, reassigning every skill choice etc. For just a cosmetic change, I wouldn't pay $1.
I would, but then again I would only pay $1. I wouldn't dare pay $15.

pretty depressing that there are enough people that have been asking for this, that they finally decided to offer the service, i have to say. just goes to show that there are people out there that'll pay for anything....

... you mean, uh, like you can do in game for 50 gold, tops?

If you're talking about class changes, that'd go against the entire philosophy. The change is purely cosmetic; it doesn't affect gameplay in any way - they're trying to avoid "he with the most money wins" scenarios. Hence why it's limited to cosmetic options only.

People who value it will pay the money. If you don't, keep your $15. It costs a fee so it can't be abused.

I would never spend $15 on a cosmetic change to my character. I wonder how the name change thing works. For example could someone be a dick/ninja things, etc. then pay the money and then nobody will know it was him?

If you change your name, it updates the friends and ignore lists of everyone on the realm to be the new name. I dare say the same thing would happen on the forums. If there's a post you know was made by the "dick/ninja" and the name/face suddenly changes, that's a dead giveaway (unless that person changed their forum avatar to be a different toon.)

The only way you're gonna get away with it really is to transfer realms as well as changing names.
Or quit WoW and do everyone else a favour. :)

So, the only things that would affect the game-play are not change-able... well, that sucks. Why have it then?

I'd say they use this as a lure for people stupid enough to waste $15 on something cosmetic so they can ban them for whatever reason later and do the rest of the community a favor.

Given that WoW is a social game and people spend hundreds of hours playing it, I really don't see anything weird about spending time or money to look good. I'd be more put off by someone who just takes the default player appearance, grabs whatever items he can get, and plays the whole game as a number-crunching exercise without any regard for style or expression.

$15 seems a bit excessive for this feature but that's a different matter.

Its just a money ploy, praying on the gullibility of the masses. "oh ho, I can now make my generic Blood Elf look like a different generic Blood Elf, my guild will accept me more"
