Welcome, Sonic! Pet Hedgehogs No Longer Illegal in Lawrence, KS

It is no longer illegal to own a pet hedgehog in Lawrence, Kansas, thanks to the three-year-long lobbying effort of an 11-year-old boy.

Judson King, now in the sixth grade, really, really wanted a pet hedgehog. Unfortunately, the laws in his home city of Lawrence, KS prohibited him from owning one - something that his mother hoped would quash the dream in its tracks. Her hopes were fruitless: rather than give up his quest for a hedgehog of his very own, King began researching hedgehogs and the law in question, and presented his case to city commissioners last January.

In the end, King fought the law, and the law didn't win - and King now has his very own, two-and-a-half-month-old baby hedgehog that he has named Little Luke.

Judson King's next goal: to persuade Sega into making a Sonic the Hedgehog game that doesn't suck.

An acquaintance of mine recently bought a hedgehog from a breeder in NH. Apparently, they have hardcore breeders for hedgehogs, and she was provided with a lineage chart and was made to sign a contract in exchange for the hedgehog, which apparently stipulated, among pricing and prohibiting abusive care, that she absolutely could not name her hedgehog Sonic. Just thought I'd share that gem.

Haha... That's really funny. I'd do that too, on second thought, if I was selling a hedgehog.

First and foremost, that hedgehog is adorable. And second, the fact that an 11-year-old had the tenacity to pull this off is inspiring. Not that I'm going to actually do anything, but it is inspiring.

I hope the mother is proud of her son for following through on this, instead of being upset that he got a pet. I'm sure she is...moms are great.

I had a pet Hedgehog for a few months. It belonged to a guy who was going away to college and couldn't take it with him. It was sort of old when we got it so it didn't live too long. He was a really awesome pet.

That was an awesome read. Totally awesome. It's nice to see what motivation could do.

well if I had to sign a clause to not name the hedgehog sonic, I would call him super sonic or I would call him shadow.

What exactly was it about hedgehogs that made it illegal to own one in that state? Is there some kind of hilarious history behind that or is it just pure, straight state retardation?

There's a reason for that, trust me. The last thing we want is a bunch of smacktards dressing up baby chimps.
