Canceled MMOG Gets Another Update

Straight from the Department of "Why Are You Doing This?" comes word that a new patch for the canceled Tabula Rasa has been released that adds the "long-promised" mech suits to the game.

Five models of mechs based on various classes are now available; any class will be able to drive them but Logos will be required to use their special abilities. The mechs will only be accessible on the Edmund Range Training Grounds, and their use will be limited to that area as well.

Along with the addition of mechs, the patch has increased the size of the Edmund Range, expanded the CELLAR Arena "in preparation for imminent Bane hostilities," added new depots and updated the visuals of all AFS buildings and structures. A number of new named weapons have also been added, along with three new armor sets, new pet and emote items and "Hyper-EXP" tokens.

An MMOG patch isn't usually big news, but this one is unique because the entire damned game is going to shut down in two weeks. continued to accept new players [http://www.ncsoft.com/], a bit unusual for MMOGs on the way out.

That decision led some conspiracy-minded observers (which is to say, me) to suggest that NCsoft might have plans for the game beyond its February 28 termination date. There's been absolutely no indication that this is even possible, but continuing to update a game that's two weeks away from the secret MMOG graveyard is above and beyond the call, to say the least. This is a development team that's remarkably dedicated to its game - or remarkably bored.

There are only two weeks left (so they say) but if you want to get a taste of it before it (supposedly) disappears, you can sign up for a free account and jump into the action at www.playtr.com [http://www.playtr.com/].

I did like TR, unfortunately I didn't like it enough to pay 15$/mo for it. If they had done the GW market strategy it could have ended up being a very decent game.

This is probably what happened. They might have been close to finishing this anyway and didn't want to just throw it away.

That is....pointless.

Do they want to give their community a present with this?

This is either incredible dedication to their fan base, which I applaud them for; or I am jumping on the conspiracy train that they have further plans for the game.

I don't see why they couldn't take this perfectly good engine and codes in an otherwise crappy setting to another "skin".
The game engine is certainly functioning fine. NCSoft now has a server farm capable of handling MMOG. And even though I have never played the game, I heard that combat is well done..it's just that the premise of the game is not very engaging to the mass.

I don't think they will do anything further with the game. But they can definitely reuse all these assets again in a different game, and use this patch as a beta test that no one will ever think of complaining about.

And yes, again.

I don't see why this couldn't be some sort diabolical ruse...to make money.

Well, there is precedent for dead subscription-based MMOGs turning into free-to-play ad-supported products. (Shadowbane.)

I doubt that's what'll happen here, though.

Yep this sums up the TR fail nicely, alot of potential with cool stuff coming....
...sometime in the future.

If they had all the cool things in the game from the start ,instead of starting the game atleast one year to early they might have survived.

Actually that was the big trend of 2007 and 2008 gamewise, the years of unfinished game releases.I can somewhat understand a really "empty" MMO with glitches ,bugs and lack of endgame content for the first weeks after releasedate, but the last couple of years i have seen this also effect singleplayer games. Some games even have a giant 600 mb patch the week after release. (we also had the trend of securom and starforce that punishes the ones that actually pays for the game, but that is the topic for another day.)

They probably made it a while ago and thought why the hell not. Still weird though, but you just can't save a sinking ship.
