"Rape Game" On Amazon Triggers Anger, Outrage

The Amazon [http://www.amazon.com] appearance of a Japanese "rape game" has elicited shock and outrage and has U.K. Parliamentarian Keith Vaz, known for his staunch opposition to videogames, up in arms and promising to bring the matter before the government.

Amazon recently advertised two copies of RapeLay for sale, a game by Japanese hentai developer Illusion [http://www.illusion.jp/] that puts players in the role of a rapist who stalks and attacks a single mother and her two teenage daughters. The game also includes a "freeform mode" in which players can assault any woman in the game and get other male characters to join in, and pregnancy and abortion are actually listed as "key features."

The whole thing is absolutely mind-boggling, and as you would expect, gamers and gaming sites that have commented on it have been universally appalled. And although Amazon has since pulled the ad and the game isn't intended for sale or use outside Japan, it seems nonetheless that U.K. Member of Parliament Keith Vaz [http://www.keithvazmp.com/] will use its existence to further his anti-videogame crusade.

"It is intolerable that anyone would purchase a game that simulates the criminal offense of rape," Vaz told the Belfast Telegraph [http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/amazon-selling-3d-rape-simulator-game-14183546.html]. "To know that this widely available through a major online retailer is utterly shocking, I do not see how this can be allowed. I will be raising this matter in Parliament and hope that action is taken to prevent the game from being sold."

Vaz, part of the "Big Three" of videogame haters that also includes Jack Thompson and Michael Atkinson, famously claimed last year that rape was a feature in some videogames [http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/03/03/video-games-linked-to-rape-in-parliament-debate]. "When people play these things, they can interact," he said at the time. "They can shoot people; they can kill people... They can rape women."

Vaz's assertion was called out not only by gamers but by a fellow MP, who checked with the GamePolitics [http://www.bbfc.co.uk/] suggests that the discovery of this game has given him some sense of "vindication."

The fact that this thing is a product of the "unique" Japanese game industry doesn't seem to be of great concern to Vaz. He wanted its sale prevented and it has been, but he will almost certainly do his best to stir up a furor in Parliament anyway. At most, Amazon made a mistake in advertising this game for sale in Western markets, and Amazon should be held accountable for it; unfortunately, it's far more likely that it will be the videogame industry that ultimately bears the brunt of the backlash.

Wow, just wow. There's no way to buy this game outside of Japan, huh?

On a serious note, games like that have been in existence for awhile in Japan now, most of them are barely games, but I suppose Mr. Vaz probably doesn't care.

The Vaz-picture is hilarious...

OT:
Well, it's Japan. I can't really say that I'm surprised they made something like this.

I just want to see how truly horrible and whatnot it actually is. I don't seriously think I could play it for longer than a few minutes without laughing out loud about how offensive it is.

This is kind of like when someone calls your family a bunch of inbread rednecks, and after denying it "that" relative walks up and completley destroys your argument.

Reasonably, a game like that should not exist, but those japanese always like to step up and be "that" relative of the game industry now and again. But in all honesty, how will he be able to make a case saying that the general population of western kids can get their hands on this? I mean jesus its one game, a 15/10 on the f'd up game scale, but still one game none the less.

Don your raincoats and golashes people, cause we're in for a sh*t storm the likes of which hasn't been seen since the first GTA uproar a few years ago.

Who is surprised? We are talking about a country which brought us hentai so something like that shouldn't surprise us.

I'm going to be a conspiracy theorist right now and say that Isn't it a coincidence that these guys accused of there being rape in video games and then a year later, you know, THE AMOUNT OF TIME THE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY TAKES TO MAKE A MODESTLY PLAYABLE VIDEO GAME, this game appears on the market?

I'm gonna say that this was a put up. "There's rape in video games!" "Uh sir, we have an inventory of the mainstream game industry here, and there is none..." "Then we'll have to COMMISSION someone to make one..." Vaz's guys go to Japan, commission someone to make the game, then pay (or have that company pay) Amazon to advertise it in Western Market.

I mean, seriously, I know Japan has this weird thing with girls and stuff, but to have it in the name? To have it as the complete intended purpose of the game? I see a put up here, but what do I know, I'm just making conspiracy theories.

For those not in the know, dear old Keith Vaz is the MP for Leicester East, who was instrumental in banning Manhunt as well.

Much as I want this 'game' burnt, I'd rather we didn't have the UK's Jack Thompson at the helm, because this isn't just going to go away with one game.

Nice theory but I'm going to say its more likely that the two are connected but in the fact that someone saw the idea, saw it didnt exist and decided to make one. As for the name? A lot of dodgy games and films are named blatantly and failing that it might be a translation/nickname of the game.
