Western Europeans Pirate More

A recent report filed by the International Intellectual Property Alliance discussing the impact of piracy on the economy found that the use of programs like Bittorrent to download unauthorized copies of videogames was highest in Western European countries.

If you've got some time to burn and the willingness to slog through piles of legalese and numbers, you might want to check out the full IIPA report [http://www.iipa.com/special301.html]. If you're anything like me, though, and reading through the report gives you a headache after approximately thirty seconds, here's some of the more interesting information:

Globally, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (or IFPI) estimated that there were 40 billion unauthorized downloads in 2008 - a whopping 95% piracy rate worldwide. If said piracy were spread out evenly through the entire population of the world, every single person on Earth would have made at least six illegal downloads last year.

More specifically concerning games, a study monitored the rate at which a selection of 13 game titles were download over the BitTorrent and EDonkey networks in December 2008. In just that one month, these 13 games were illegally downloaded 6,429,279 times by users spread across 223 separate countries and territories (impressive, given that Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries] only lists 203 countries - both recognized and unrecognized). By volume, the worst offenders were: Italy (17.%), Spain
(15.1%), France (7.9%), Germany (6.9%), and Poland (6.1%), while the countries who pirated the most per capita were Israel, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Poland.

While at first glance it's surprising to see a list of the most piracy-happy countries without big names like China and Brazil, remember that this only applies to programs like BitTorrent. Much of the piracy that happens in China, for example, is wholly "legitimate" - that is, it's sold in physical form in actual stores.

Gee, this week [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_189/5757-Pirates-Anonymous]. I'd bet that would have been really interesting.

Not really surprised about the results. A cursory glance at a torrent site will show there's at least as many Spanish, German, French, Italian, or Polish torrents as there are English ones. Plus the fact that German games tend to be censored more often than other territories, and you've got a market for pirated foreign releases.

Impressive. I thought that the easterners were the ones who pirated more. I feel better about myself now :D

I suddenly feel inspired to hang a jolley roger on my house... That urge aside, figures like "every single person on Earth would have made at least six illegal downloads last year" oughta shut the MPAA up. Just shows the utter hypocracy of some people.

Hmm intresting and the fact that there are 23 countries wikipedia doesn't know about is suspicious and intriuging at the same time.

Yes, I want to see this list and do some cross checking. Are they listing both Congos and Zaire? Because there's some overlap there.

Well duh, Europe pays nearly double what the US pays for games. Did developers really think players would pay when there's a free alternative?

It's still odd that none of these studies include China, although that's probably a good thing, the IIPA may implode from the shock if they looked at piracy in China.

This seems about right. People around here seem alot more lax about piracy compared to most Americans I meet over the internet.

They probably did, as China is included in the rest of the report. But while more pirated goods are sold in China, I'd be willing to bet that fewer people torrent games like they do in the West - they buy them in stores.

Great how everyone running a bittorrent client is considered now a criminal... have they even "remotely" took into considerations that a part of the bittorrent downloads are in fact free and legal downloads like demos, mods, whatever? I love wrong statistics... you can proof any bullshit with them.

Thats not what it said. It just said that bittorrent was monitored, meaning the files as opposed to the amount of people using the program.

I may be ignorant, but what is the MPAA?

If I have the right orgainization and acronym (mind's a lil fried from a star trek marathon), I think its the "Motion Pictures Association of America". They're the ones who like to run around and ask for insane amounts of money from college kids for pirating music and movies.

It would make sense that poorer people in bad economies would get more free stuff illegally. Look at pirated DVDs in China or Cuba or India. Those black market industries make almost as much money as the legitimate ones.

I think it's going to be really funny when the MPAA flies lawyers to Backwardsia and tries to sue people for downloading illegal copies of crappy Hollywood romantic comedies. No doubt they'll win the cases, but it's going to be hard to recoup your traveling expenses when people are paying damages in chickens and goat butter.

Yep! Here in Brazil you can buy physical copies in almost every city - and easily. Is not like if you were drug dealing. Depending on where you live, you just need to go the nearest game store. On other cities just go to one that is not located in a mall (like in big cities such as são paulo, rio de janeiro, belo horizonte). Plus, many people are now using RapidShare and family (in several rar-files) because they are a bunch of lechers and can't queue or share (ed2k is still big here and most people who uses torrent for downloading games use private trackers).

Cheers!
