PS3 Sales Double In Japan

Thanks to the release of Sega's Yakuza 3, the PS3 is enjoying a stint as the king of the sales hill in Japan, in a reverse of last week's charts which saw the Xbox 360 standing tall.

Last week saw the world on the brink of apocalypse [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/89746-360-Outsells-PS3-Wii-in-Japan] when the Xbox 360 outsold both the PS3 and Wii in Japan, but it's a different story this week as the PS3 has summarily handed all its competitors a fierce trouncing, outselling not only its console rivals, but the DSi and PSP as well.

The PSTriple [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2C3GylDckg] pushed 36,513 units in the Land of the Rising Sun, more than a full-fledged double of last week's meager 16,149 units sold. The complete turn-around can be ascribed to the release of Sega's Japanese mafia epic Yakuza 3, which topped software sales with 372,000 copies sold. The 360, though buoyed by the release of Star Ocean: The Last Hope last week, fell off by a margin of 13,500 units to 11,795. The Wii brought in 17,876 in sales.

On the handheld front, the DS Lite sold 11,774 units and the new-fangled DSi a healthy 35,827, hot on the heels of the PS3. The PSP saw some gains as well with sales of 35,588 thanks to a new Dynasty Warriors game. I guess if you added the DS Lite and DSi numbers, technically the DS sold the most over the week, but let's just give the PS3 some time to shine.

nice to see some positive press on the 'doomed' ps3 , now only if the western audiences have that killer app that sell's unit's.

yakuza looks stunning and i really can't wait to see how it pans out. it's the closet thing to a shenmue remake as were gonna get i think

I was going to say something to this effect.
Bravo!

I give kudos to sony for finally managing something as a combination of bad price point and poor marketing has really done something strange to the old king of the hill.

Reversal of fortunes or temporary blip?

only time will tell

How does the DS sales make up more than the PS3 sales. They say 372'000. They must mean 37'200.

Well, what do you expect? Game consoles based soley on novelty and gimmicks are bound to get old fast. People are putting their Wiis away and are buying a real machine now.
