Al Lowe Dumps on Leisure Suit Larry
Leisure Suit Larry creator Al Lowe has posted some rather harsh comments on his blog about Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust [http://www.codemasters.com/leisuresuitlarry/], the latest game in the franchise that he calls a "disaster."
Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust was released at the end of March, published by Metacritic [http://www.codemasters.com] score of 25.
The critical thumping seems to have sparked a certain degree of schadenfreude in Lowe, who sounded just a little bit more gleeful than necessary in comments he posted on his Lowe wrote [http://www.allowe.com/]. "For a while, I hoped that they would remember to send me a review copy. Now that the reviews are in, it's just as well that they didn't!"
"[Executive Producer John] Melchior wanted to make a game that 'Al Lowe would like to play'," he continued. "I wonder why he didn't just ask me? Ah well; it can't be worse than Magna Cum Laude [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_lovage], can it? Now that the reviews are coming in, the answer is: Yes, it can!"
Lowe launched the Leisure Suit Larry franchise in 1987 with Love for Sail! [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leisure_Suit_Larry_in_the_Land_of_the_Lounge_Lizards] in 1996, although he also designed the 1998 release Leisure Suit Larry's Casino. The franchise was revived in 2004 with Magna Cum Laude without Lowe's participation.
It's hard to tell if Lowe is bitter about not being included in the rebirth of the franchise or genuinely happy that it's faring so poorly without him. In either case, he's not shy about speaking his mind. After linking to very poor reviews from GameSpot, CheatCodeCentral [Thank you, VU Games, for keeping me completely away from this latest disaster!] and IGN, Lowe said, "Thank you, VU Games, for keeping me completely away from this latest disaster!"
