OnLive Beta Signups Now Being Taken

OnLive, the streaming game system that's getting all the attention at GDC [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/content/gdc/2009], is now taking applications for its upcoming beta program.

OnLive is a streaming service that provides on-demand videogames to customers without requiring any high-end gaming hardware. It's design to work with run-of-the-mill PCs, including laptops and netbooks, and OnLive also plans to make available a small "MicroConsole" for customers without a computer in the home. The system was Ubisoft [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90423-OnLive-Cloud-Based-Gaming-of-the-Future] and several others.

The beta test isn't running now but is scheduled to begin in the summer of this year. Testers must be at least 18 years old with a broadband-connected PC running Windows XP or Vista, or an Intel-based Mac, and have to live in the U.S. If that sounds like you, put your name in the hat here [http://www.onlive.com/beta_program.html].

Am I the only one that feels kind of shady about this?
Not one bit. It's like paying a total stranger to keep all of your games at his house, and he lets you borrow them whenever you want to play them.

Even Steam lets you download the data to your hard drive.

This reminds me of the defunct/failed Phantom console that was talked about back in 2002 by Phantom Entertainment.
